aw you'll love birmingham and yes it is much greener than people think! lovely lovely parks in birmyland! cannon hill park near edgbaston for starters! but if you look up birmingham tourism on t'interweb you'll find other parks too!

music venues...your 18 so im guessing youre going to uni? you will more than likely hit Snobs nightclub on a weds. alternative rock/punk in one room and 60s soul in t'other. 50p a shot night on weds.vodka is bloody awful but everyone knocks it back. also highly recommend chips and curry from the kebab place couple of doors down. but leave slightly early if you don't want to queue and wait hours for a cab!
again on a rock side, the academy is popular. i never went much. subway city i think the night is called.
broad street has all the regular clubs - reflex, wetherspoons, revolution etc. apparently flares has a few letchy men in it so i never went.
hurst street and essex street have the gay bars. dv8 on a thursday night is top banana if you love camp cheese, but i think its members only. the nightingale in same area is more trendy i think. and glam bar comes highly recommended from my friend though i never made it there myself.
if im right and you are a student. if you live anywhere near selly oak, check out the selly sausage cafe! supersweet little place, great food, main student cafe haunt i reckon.

hm, what else do you want to know :)

hm, i may be moving back up that way at some point. still undecided

There are no best places in birmingham itself. There is millions of ring roads and everthing is rather bleak. The Bull Ring is the highlight of the new millenium. worth a visit. There are no underground suburban transit systems which is a shame because Birmingham is massive.

hm, also check out the Oasis market though its due to be demolished i think. its birminghams equivalent to afflecks palace in manchester. go get there, walk down new street the high street in town) in direction of the bullring (turn right at end of the ramp out of the pallasades shopping mall). walk down and follow the street as it curves round at the bottom, (away from the bullring) and follow it round. and you will come to a big market which has all the goth/hippy/punk/fetish etc shops :)

Apparently - Brimingham has more greenery than practically any city in Europe and more canals than venice - personally I think its a dirty shithole that is full of violence and wouldnt go to a nightclub in the city centre where they play any form of (ahem !) Urban music because if you do theres about a 1 in 10 chance you or someonelse will get shot !
Brum stinks if I were you I would go to Bristol or Bath or Hull

Hull? It's worse than Birmingham! Cold and miserable and everyone talking in stupid accents (even though I have a slight trace of a Northern accent). Fuck Hull.
    Birmingham's not too bad.

bah, birmingham isnt so awful. i walked alone many times through the city centre at night . not that i recommend it of course. i know someone who got mugged and there were a couple of murders in the city centre while i lived there. but to be honest, i hear of more violence in north wales where i live now than i did about the city centre part of birmingham. its no more dangerous than any other city. all cities have there bad areas. for example, i have never ever been to nechells. its rough so why go there?!

I am hoping Birmingham will disappear in a big nuclear blast as it isw really a crummy horrid city that is pompously pretentious and has these buildings that the councillors thought would make it look more like Dallas. Its a joke city and the second city of Britain should be Manchester not Birmingham

well its not really hell but by god its a cultural desert. ok a few clubs are on the go - is Wobble still going I doubt it but who knows ?
but apart from that its really is just a violent redneck sak of shit
no wonder there is such tension there between the races
everyone comes second to the car and 99% of the time the only people who get anything out of the council are wealthy business owners who want cheap labour in their shops and factories

djbelkin - all cities have their bad areas, but equally all cities have nicer areas. birmingham is a great city. its not like its necessary to go to nechells and start stirring up racial hatred... you can just live there and enjoy the nice areas. i never had any need to go anywhere not nice, so i never felt as if i was missing places out. and the student area is cool.

oh fragile nothing - check out the khanum balti house in selly oak :) its a small one near bargain booze on same side of street....muchly good curry!

i never had any problems in birmingham. i was nervous about moving there when i was 18. i come from the country so i was terrified and then i moved to a town which my tutors told me was really rough. well i responded by dressing all gothy, with my big studded dog collar, and walked about with a 'do not mess with me' attitude the first week i was there hehe. i didnt get so much hassle. some kids threw stones at me sure, once, and i got some hassle off some guys who were setting fire to a motor bike in the park. but i didnt feel unsafe. i had no problems living there at all. in fact i was more scared of the geese in the park - theyre big birds!! i guess this doesnt add to the 'nice' image im trying to give, but im not foolish enough to pretend its perfect :) but i had very little hassle. i loved it. x

Birmingham is absolutely massive. Most of it is kind of different Towns joined together. Ring roads and Spaghetti junction. The Bull ring, this defines Birmingham.

Why has Birmingham got no underground transits? I would have thought a massive City. Well second biggest to London, don't invest in the rail services. Birmingham doesn't have a centralised population. Mostly it has suburbs. No underground, means it is a hell to perdition trying to get from north to south.

Good points: Bull Ring. Excellent shopping facilities. Shame about the exterior design. It doesn't go with the surrounding buildings. It is like having the Houses of Parliament on Manhattan island.

birmingham doesnt need underground networks...its got a good frequent overground rail service, though i think it had a small metro network around the jewellery quarter area.

also by the bullring - check out digbeth markets :D

my girlfriend went to Brum. She came back with a huge map of Brum stuck in the back pocket. We opened up the map, she fainted, I saw lots of compass points and mark trails done in felt tip. No transit system. She used the buses. Cost her a lot of money.

well you can get a day bus pass for £2.50 or an evening pass for £1.40. may have gone up a little but wont be massively. transport in birmingham is really good. mebbe better if you live there though and know best ways to get to places. like in london. some places its just cheaper and easier to walk
