Ive been using internet chat rooms and chat forums for 5/6 years now. That might not sound like a long time to most people but that means i started using internet chat rooms when i was 12/13 years old.
The first chat sites i ever used were the yahoo ones and a place called freezone. Now its got to the point where i feel almost totally comfortable with meeting people who i have met on the internet (mostly due to these forums) and also have quite a lot of trust in people who i meet online.

Now with most sites outside these forums i guess i wouldnt be as quick to trust people however when stuck in circumstances like at reading festival this year when all myfriends decided to ignore me as i turned up i was given no choice but to ring up someone who i had spoken to a few times online and ask if i could camp with him. I was lucky because he turned ot to be a lovely person with a lovely group of friends.

I was just wondering how many other people here have found themselfs becoming almost acustumed to meeting up with people from online? Who no longer find it surreal to sit at a cafe or in some woods or in a pub with someone and think "i met you through the internet".

What are peoples opinion of the growing comfortability with the internet?

Personally i think its a really good thing as its a great way to meet people. However it also has many downsides as im sure we are all aware of.

Do you think these forums have been good for us in this sence as in theyve made us less sceptical of every single person we meet on line, or do you think theyve in many ways dulled our sences towards being aware that we have no idea who we are talking to?

    just a ponderous thought.

I'm pretty comfortabele with it, after all i camped with you lot at glastonbury having spoken to you not so much :p and that worked out all good!

I;ve met loads of nice people online (only one stalker so far ;)) including one guy who is so lovely.... damn being already in a relationship :p

i dont have much of a problem with meeting people, but i guess i would be less willing to meet people fom outside this forum and OG, the ohter one i use every day.

I think it's a pretty great way to meet like minded people. Only as adults though, the internet is quite a fucked up thing for kids and young teens to surf on. The meeting people side being the biggest worry. But all the violent images and porn too makes it a pretty seedy place. Wouldn't want my kids online unmonitered that's for sure.

But aye, as I say, I don't see the problem with adults meeting people this way.

I mean, going along to a local pub, what are the chances that everyone is gonna despise globalisation, or dig Radiohead. The net groups folk with similar interest together rather beautifully really.

Plus who says it's all that safe just meeting people in person. No one I've met online has threatened to cut my throat while I sleep. Happened down the pub though!

It's perfectly safe if you follow a few simple rules. The scare stories are all where people just haven't been careful... if you're not careful just out on the streets at night you can get into trouble. Like anything, just be careful and it's fine. I've never met up with anyone without having got to know them extremely well first and having talked on the phone and stuff. A forum like this is a good way to get to know people over the course of months before meeting them. Meeting some random person you just met in a chatroom is not something anyone should do...

T'internet is a great way to meet likeminded people you would never have come across in any other way.

I feel pretty comfortable on these forums..
the first time i met people off the internet was glastonbury 3 years back when i met poopheonix, jonny, dais, sonicflloyd and kelso..
it was lovely, just like meeting people i had known for a fair while..
and gradually over the years ive met more and more of you and its been fantastic :)
but i met these people in a group, i would be a bit more wary meeting someone, whether from the forums or a chat room, alone.

    Yeah I totally agree Fleassy.

I've made some really close friends on the net before. Maybe I wouldn't have met them had it not been for the net. One of my closest mates...she met her boyfriend online and they now live together, and her mum met her husband there! hehe.
In reality, meeting people online is just as dodgy as going for a drink with a bloke you meet in a nightclub - it all depends the individual. :)

well..... i first met people when i met sal and sunny 2 years ago at the train station at castle cary, kat did turn up giggling like a lunitic for a few second then they all went away. i was nervous and at first it was a bit weird but i think that was more down to my state of mind at the time.

meeting dok and sam was brilliant and felt really natural, i found the same thing with claire, jc, an fleassy before beautiful days. and at the fest itself it was wonderful, it really felt lik ei knew everyone already,(jumping head first and getting my boobies out was a great was to break the ice too!he he:rolleyes: )
the only time it felt really surreal was up the oak tree with fleas, kev, austin, kier, jc, and keith. i could image the conversation we were having being posted on the boards and it was super trippy!
but i have these forums to thank for a lot, meaning kev......after talking for 4 years then meeting up i know he knows me and i know him...its so surreal but amazing! so yeah i think on something like this it can and does work but i don't think id be so keen to meet someone off a chatroom.....just my own insecuritues i guess!

Sounds like the most fun I've heard from people meeting up on the net Rainbow Dew! hehe. I might be meeting another net-friend soon. It's been a while since meeting anyone this way, so i'm all nervous again! :)
I told my other mate about it but he thought it was kinda lame to meet someone on the net. :( That kinda attitude is so annoying!

i know what you mean marie, telling all my mates how i met kev is kinda...well its got so much stigma attatched to it.....and when i explain this site etc, i do tend to get rather a lot of giggles! but hey each to their own, i have no shame:rolleyes: he he. and i did join here rather a long time ago....oh why bother justifying myself, im a computor nerd...thats right, and proud! he he
