im concidering to go to berkeley university for 1 semester. beeing from norway my knowledge of the place is limited. just wondering if anyone can tell me a littlebit about the place, cause i dont know anything. so if u are from the area, plz just tell me anything u can think of that is interesting. and i mean anything, cause i dont even know stuff like if the winter there is cold with snow like here in norway, or if its just a littlebit colder then the summer. info info info, i need it
I am from Half Moon Bay, Cal which is just south of San Fran sooooo, yeah, Berkeley is in my area. I really like the city because of the vibe from all the smart uni kids and the neo-hippy culture. Plenty of great spots to grab bites to eat and amazing concerts at the Greek Theater on the Berkeley campus. The weather isn't too hot (it is Northern Cal!) and not too cold either.... If i could choose any UC, it would be Berkeley. congrats buddy
wow, that sounds nice. "The weather isn't too hot (it is Northern Cal!) and not too cold either" beeing from norway i will probably concider that quite hot =P what is the prices of stuff there? like, how much is it for a beer in a bar? and how much for a decent dinner? im so hyped. going to a infomeeting at my own uni on wednesday to find out what classes in berkeley that fits my program. how far from berkeley is san francisco? ive seen the distance on the map, but not knowing the region i have a hard time to transfer what i see on the map to hours/minutes by car
I lived in Marin (how I miss home there..) which is the North Bay (across a bridge from Berkeley). Its amazing. Lots of things to do and people to meet. The weather really depends on what part of the bay you are in at any given time. Some places are pretty cool because of the water and such. Others can get hot in the summer. Winter doesn't have snow. It rains a LOT. Berkeley is like this little oasis of the East Bay (no offense if anyone is from the East Bay who reads this). Ultra-liberal. Very fun. The Uni. is amazing. Only downside is how many people go there (tourist types) expecting to see the 1960s. But you get that problem throughout the Bay. If you're liberal and open minded about "alternative lifestyles" and such, its a great place to try living in. Prices are expensive. (though in comparison to Norway, I have no idea). Dinner is like $15 a person, depending on the restaurant of course (if I remember right...). I dont know about the beer since I was a minor when I lived there.
i think 15$ sounds quite cheep, but norway is the 2nd most expencive country in the world after japan, so that is maybe the reason. i like the fact that u have no snow. rain doesnt botter me that much, but im sooooo sick of the snow here in norway. im quite liberal and openminded, so that shouldnt be any problem (hey, im a metalhead with dreads, i dont think i will react much to anything alternative: hybernating hippies, black satanic metalheads, gay parades, whatever, i dont mind, i love different people that are not afraid to stand out in a crowd). reading what u people write is really geting me interested.. i cant wait until wednesday to know the specifics og my studying oportunities there. im a bit scared that my english isnt good enough and that the locals wont speak to this weird european dude that dont speak fluent english. but nah, its probably just me worrying about something that isnt the case
