Gday everyone, i have seriously looked high and low all over the internet and have asked everyone with dreads that i have seen but still havent found a solid answer to my question hopefully until now.

I live in Australia and surfed everyday to everysecond day before i got my nappys and have been itching to get back out there but have feared hitting the water again as

    (a) My dreads loosen up already when i take a shower let alone fully submerging them and when i have swam in a pool they have loosened up a lot.

    (b) Im just plain scared that they are going to unravel and im not going to spend the amount of time and money that i spent on them last time.

Firstly anyone who surfs (Or fully submerges their dreads for extended amount of time) how did you find your dreads turned out the first couple of times afterwards?

I think they are fairly tight but how tight or old should my dreads be before i should fully submerge them?

    Lastly, am i being paranoid?

I have attached a pic (sorry dont have any real good ones) of my 10-11 month old dreads if this helps decide where they you think they are mature enough.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,
    Cheers Clarke

you got no worries mate! 10-11 month old dreadies are mature enough! Salt water is great for them, dries them out, which tightens them up. When you get out just rinse the sand out. I surf and I was in the water the day after getting my dreads done. And it felt great! I've never had any problems other than they get in my way sometimes and they take awhile to dry. Go for it!

wow... avoiding saltwater and surfing because of dreads seems like a sin to me. some of the most beautiful natural dreads I've seen were helped along because of those very 2 things...

    my dreads loves ocean water

i live on the beach, and i swim constantly in the ocean. it actually helps tighten my dreads, i've noticed, so get your butt back on your board and have fun!

Yay ! got the answer i was hoping for. Thanks everyone, but for those that do submerge their dreads do you get many fly away and do they need to be back combed after surfing?

Once again thanks for you advice everyone,
    Cheers, Clarke

    here ya go!

and also he went natural style, so expect it to be a lil diff...

I'm sure nothing will drasticaly lossin after 11 months but even if it did, all that saltwater would have it napier than ever after a week

Ditto to happy hippie! The salt water is probably the best and most natural way to tighten your dreads! Your dreadies are awsome by the way! They look really tight, so I don't think you will have a problem with them loosening-they should do the opposite and tighten! Do you crochet your dreads?
