I keep asking mom to get me the stuff I need too actually be healthy on a vegitarian diet, cause the lettuce in the fridge, and the peanut butter isnt gonna cut it for my health. She keeps sayign she will and she never does. All I can eat is the lettuce and the peanut butter (and milk), and when a "salad" is made hear, it involves throwign lettuce in chicken meat and havign it soak in the juices with a couple salad seasonings. and when I tell her im gettign really hungry, she say its cause Im not eatign meat. she makes enough money to buy me some food when she goes to the store. we got soem fruit, my dads first thought was to carmelize it.
that really sucks. have you asked to go with her to the store and pick some things out yourself? i'll post again later with some good veg sites for you, after i finish my homework
so wait....everything in your house besides lettuce and pb is meat? theres no canned veggies, no bread, nothing? day-um. im a vegan so i have to be a teeny bit more concious to maintain a balanced diet, but i would think you'd be okay just cutting out meat and replacing it with some beans and a bit of pb for protein....dont overdo that pb though, its full of fat.
I agree. Go with her. have a couple things you'd like per trip, filling things: tinned beans, noodles, olive oil, carrots/broccoli, frozen veggies, some fruit. come up with a limit on the price, say, $15. also, check out vegan on a budget: http://vegsandiego.com/veg/8/Veganism_on_a_Budget.htm
Well, you may have a couple of choices here. First, you could try going shopping with your parents next time they go to the store and tell them what you would like while you are there. That way, they won't have the opportunity to say they'll get around to it. If you don't have the time to go to the store with your parents, you should try writing out a short shopping list for them. What else you could try is cooking your own food. If you see vegetables around the house you could make a salad or something else out of, go for it. You don't just want to live on salad, though. There are many websites out there with tons of easy and quick recipes (try http://www.vegweb.com). Whenever you are able to get your own job, I would advise you to do so. It is easier, I think, for veg*ans to not depend on others for food, but I understand it is difficult when you are still under the age of 18.
AT your age you could babysit and use that money to buy extra food items. Maybe if you gave your mom a short list and said, "Would you please pick up x,y, and z when you buy groceries this week?" The next week give her another list with a few items on it. Once she gets used to picking up these items it will be easier for her. It could be that she just doesn't know what to buy for you. Kathi
