    Hey hipforumers,
I was hoping you could maybe offer me some help/advice...
About a week ago I was gifted with a Toshiba laptop. I'm not sure if it is LCD screen, but it's really bright and is also shiny. I also have a shelf of books over the table where my laptop sits and the other day a heavy book fell onto it and scratched the screen. It looks more like a gash/dent than a real scratch, and it's about the size of a small fly. It's not too horibble but still bothers me alot. I've tried putting petrolium jelly (vaseline) on it to cover it but it didn't work. I also found this product http://www.amazon.com/Displex-Display-Scratch-Remover/dp/B000BD1GKE/ref=pd_bbs_sr_3/002-6596421-9765615?ie=UTF8&s=miscellaneous&qid=1189088277&sr=8-3 but am not sure if it's worth it.
I'm really buggin out over this, can anyone offer me any advice?

    Thanks a bunch!
    Much peace to all :)

If a book fell on it and dented it, that could be a problem. the pixels will distort around the dent. try it what have you got to loose, the other suggestion is to look on ebay for a computer that is being sold as spares or repairs thats exactly the same model as yours. Ask the seller if the screen is in perfect condition. If they say yes buy it and have a specialist replace it

Dents like this don't heal themselves yet. Limp along as is until you can afford something better. Toshiba is the Ford of the laptop world. This means that parts are not hard to come by. Gonna cost you a few $ though.

I should probably clarify...it's not really a dent, like the pixels underneath don't look discoloured or anything...pretty much it looks like a bit of the glass/screen is chipped off...the screen is totally fine but the outer glass has a bit of a groove from what looks like where the book scraped it off...know what i mean? it's kinda hard to describe but i feel like if i could find the right solution i would be able to buff/fill in the little gash. thanks so much for your suggetions so far though! :) any others?

    thanks a bunch!

Your pretty much stuck with it unless you shell out enough money for a new screen. If you dont know much about computers then you will have to pay someone to fix it.

Your best bet is to just leave it alone. Dont try to patch it because it will make the screen look worse.

Sorry babe. Just take good care of it and maybe you can get it fixed in the future or if you can get money for it. Actually, do you have any friends that build/repair computers as a hobby or job?

if you do buy another screen, replacing it is pretty straight-forward and you can most likely do it yourself saving $100 or so. the screens are expensive though and generally not worth replacing. my laptop is over 4 years old and has some beauty marks all over it, including the screen. living with it and being more cautious are your best options imho.

I like how you call those "beauty marks".

You should find someone with a lot of experience to fill in the gash. I would do it but I expect youre in the usa ;) bit of a long way to go for a small gash.
