Use of Methyl Alcohol in MG extraction

By using Methanol instead of having to go through the hassle of finding somone to buy me Everclear, things would already be easier. On top of that, Methanol is a lot cheaper since it isn't drinkable.

The only way I know how to get Methanol is in antifreeze. Heet brand antifreeze is said to be 99% Methanol, which is good, but the real question would be is it safe to use methanol? It evaporates cleanly I'm pretty sure.

 

Well, if I was using it for an extraction I wouldnt go with anti-freeze. Theres no way it's pure methanol, something is bound to be left behind. Just buy lab-grade methanol if you want it.

I hear that methanol has better yields than ethanol, sounds like a good idea!

 

hmm, but how easy would it be to obtain lab-grade stuff? Probably not too hard since it's just Methanol.

I was also thinking of Denatured Alcohol, but there are random things they add that might turn out nasty in the end.

 

If you cant find the methanol, maybe 99% IPA would work, I used 80 proof vodka in a LSA extraction once, whats good about using vodka is that it is part water. One can distill "LSA'd vodka" and have a solution that is LSA water after the alcohol is boiled off.

 

That sounds like a good idea, but LSA is said to be sensitive to heat, so who knows.
