So, I've had quite the past. It started with rape, molestation, pregnancies at 9 and 11, divorce, hatred from my family, hatred from my father, and being over weight for close to 10 years, alcoholism, drugs, high school crap. And I'm still here today to tell the tale.

I preach this to everyone I know that has depression, anxiety, yadda yadda yadda.

Try keeping a journal and writing down your fears, problems, and the good things that happen in your day. I started keeping a journal at a very young age. I think that my journal is the only reason I'm here today. I would have commit suicide a long time ago, if it hadn't been for the fact that I could write down my problems, reread them and come up with a solution.

I highly highly highly suggest starting a journal. Especially for the young hipsters. Once you write down the good, the bad, and the ugly-after a while, you'll realize why life is worth the happiness. And, in years to come, you'll realize how petty your problems were.

    Just my 2cents.

There is an old saying that goes "That which does not kill us makes us stronger".

If you can find a way to tap this negative energy into something useful, you've done more for yourself than anybody could ever do for you.

    Salute.

Exactly. Which is why I suggest writing. However, a lot of people release that negative energy in other ways-meditation, a lot of men will work out, it's really just anything you love doing...I just wish everyone would realize that it can be easy to get over mental disorders.

I admire people with strength and wisdom like yours, Malia.

And yes, I totally agree with you. My journals certainly helped keep me going too. It may always seem like there's only bad and ugly, but the good is there, and just simply putting it in writing is enough to remind you of that.

When I'm in a bad mood-or when something bad happens, I write about it. However, whenever I'm in a bad mood, I make sure to point out the good points of my day-what I'm thankful for.

I fought a serious spell of depression by knowing what I'm thankful for each day. It's usually the same things, but they work for me! When I write them down, it's solid.

I've also noticed that when you get a journal-get a composition notebook. That way, you can make it yours. I like to tape pictures of my friends and family and all of the things I like-it puts me in a good mood when I go through it. I use my journal as a scrapbook, too. I post all kinds of cool quotes from magazines and beautiful pictures all over the cover and pages.

It's the most relaxing thing that I can do-write write write!

When you write-you should just let things flow without thinking about them.

I have an exercise that I do every full moon called "The Rumble Beneath My Feet." Here is the exercise portion:

What are the rumbles in your everyday life? Are there things that happen to you each day that are too painful to notice? that you feel resigned and helpless about so you have stopped paying attention? that keep you from writing? Does someone close to you undermine you? Is a job or a relationship sapping your energy? A lot of people who grew up in homes filled with daily rumbling tend to re-create the same situations. It's important to try to clear the air and tell the truth. Writing can help you pay attention to your life. Write about what bothers you. What's rumbling you? After you write, ask yourself: What prevents me from seeing or changing my situation?
Sometimes it takes a while to clear away the rumbling, to create the environment you need-but it's still important to write. You don't need perfect conditions, but you do need to be honest and pay attention. Write your way into clarity.

I got this from a book called Writing Toward Home. I can't remember the author right now, but the entire book is amazing-even if you aren't a regular writer. It really helps you tap into your mind and find that relief through writing.
