autonomic computing is set to be big over the next few decades
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autonomic_Computing
In basic terms, Autonomic Computing is where machines which run into problems, hardware and software, go some or all the way to solving the problem by themselves. This is brought about by the fact that demand for IT administrators far outstrips supply

Why not try Nitix Linux and see for yourself what can be acxhieved so far

It's good stuff but requires massive resources.

It would be like compiling source code every time a problem was fixed. We can do it but it takes forever.

In decades to come, we will have the hardware resources to do this.

In centuries to come, machines will rule men.

And from hyperspace the AC shouted "LET THERE BE LIGHT!". And on the seventh day He rested.

Personally I do not belive it is too ambitious as IBM and others have been mulling over the problem for decades.
I do not believe they will opt for a self fixing system in the end unless they have to. It seems to me more resourceful to have one computer that fixes many in a network.
I dont pretend to understand the ins and outs of it but i do know quite a few people are excited by recent developments in that area. I have it ticked as "must find out more"

Some govt facility in the US was just built as a HUGE server that has a 'self repairing system'. Well, about as close to 'self repairing' as it gets. I think they use Gentoo Linux.

I am excited to hear about this. The only thing is, what if someone automates viruses and identity theft to create its own code that works. Just a thought.

That is very true about computer companies designing more powerful stuff. They have released the Quad cores now. For the people who dont know, that is like having 4 computers in one. You already knew that.
