but it's really hard for me but i really am trying. is it because i never went to one of their shows?

someone i know told me they weren't really into them until she saw them live

(even though i know i cant see them live)

i know exactly what your talking about. I grew up (90's 00's) on Neil Young, Graham Nash, Byrds, Doors, Hendrix, etc. But ive NEVER really liked the Dead. BUT i do absolutely LOVE some songs. (Fire on the Mountain, Wharf Rat, are some in particular). I dont really like Phish either. But i love a lot of other jam bands and stuff similar. Call me fvckin crazy i know, but i dont judge music by their name. i like the dead a lot, but i just cant put that on over something else i like. Im probly gonna get creamed for sayin this haha :)

Wait, so you are saying you aren't getting it but you want to keep tying?
I'd ask myself why. You can't force yourself to like anything, only tolerate.

Now, if you really want to give this a whirl, tell us what you like and we can find a facet of the Dead that might resonate with you.

Jerry always said the Dead were like licorice: you love it or hate it.
I love licorice and the Dead.

but I never caught the Phish wave, and yeah, I get shredded here for that. What? I should lie?

    this is true

but, i can totally relate...before I had seen the Dead, I had a lot of friends who were heads, and would tell great tales of tour, and the magic flowing from the stage. I wanted to understand, but the music never totally grabbed me. After my first show, I was very intrigued with the weirdness of the music, but still didnt get it...
A couple of months later, I finally got it...not at a show, but on the front porch in the middle of the night listening to Europe 72...

you dont have to see a show to get it, but dont limit yourself to listening to studio albums...the real stuff was happening when the music was created on stage...in the moment...

believe it if you need it, if you don't just pass it on.....

If that is the case have you tried listening to any of the live shows from the sixties? I would suggest the show from 5/2/70 Harpur College, NY. You can buy it as "Dick's Picks volume 8". The first set is legandary.

they have over 2000 grateful dead shows (all for free) on the archive (archive.org) so that would be a good place to start listening to some LIVE dead. which i have to agree is the way to listen to them. I have some older friends (older than me atleast haha) who saw the dead numerous times, and they see all the shows i see currently. And some of my favorite shows ive ever seen (everyone orchestra, medeski scofiled martin and wood, Pnuma in 2006, etc) and they say that the live grateful dead shows were world class and dont even compare to the shows nowadays. I cant imagine how awesome it must have been if they "dont even compare" to some of the shows nowadays. Too bad i was born about 20 years too late lol

i dont know maybe it just isnt your cup of tea. dont get into it just for the image. i love the dead, but to be completely honest, i would much rather listen to phish. ive heard many good things about the string cheese incident so im gonna look them up. but its all in opinions. just cause you dont like the dead doesnt mean you have to leave the forums :)

i love the dead........hell..........I was born on the bus and haven't stepped off for so much as a piss break........but everyone don't get it.......and that's cool too.....you gotta conform to the motion of your inner groove......if your still feeling drawn, check out some live dead..........the archives are a great place, as well as gdlive.com.....and if your still not feeling it........DISMOUNT.

What folks forget is Cowboy Neal was ONE driver in one time, and there's lots of buses to Never never land these days!

At the final Cheese show (for now, they say, and I cornered Jack, who did the intros that show, to little avail...I think I'll take him to lunch in a couple months) Das (Hemp I Scream guy) was all weepy and asking what will hold us together.
So I'm looking at this white haired guy who's asking my under 40 ass what's next.
I told him this: we don't know, but we found life after Dead. We can do this again.

ive been listening to the dead my whole life too...and its mainly because i grew up around it.

my dad listens to the dead so i kind of followed in his footsteps.
i never got to see them in concert but that doesnt stop me from liking them.
its really not something you "get into" if your not sure if you like them in the first place.

your from pittsburgh thats cool, i goto school at Cal U

yeah grateful dead is a hard band to force your self to like

i grew up around it and hated it my whole childhood

now im a full blown deadhead, its so fun to hear the band evolve after 30 years of touring, every time they play a song it has its own unique twist, no songs are played the same live

but if you really want to get into them i suggest you listen to a bunch of studio shit, pick a few songs you like then go searching for live versions of them at www.setlists.net, then take it from there
    live dead >>>>>studio dead

If you don't like them, you don't like them and that's it.

Get really high, listen to some of the old 60s shows (I personally recommend Fillmore East 2-11-1969, disc 2) and if it still doesn't click, then well, maybe the Dead just aren't for you. Yes, they're iconic and all but it's really not the end of the world if you simply can't get into them, there's plenty of other great music around, and you should listen to what you like, not what you think you should like but don't.

As my close personal friend Arnold once said: "WRONG\n"

The Grateful Dead are best enjoyed with a joint and the Ladies And Gentlemen... The Grateful Dead 4 cd set. I've never seen them (too young) but have the cover of reckoning tattooed on my chest and a song title on my arm, they are the greatest American Rock and Roll Band to ever grace a stage.

Yea, dont make yourself like the Dead-its not for everyone. Just respect what they did for the music scene and everyone to follow.

Smoke a little weed and then listen to Help / Slipknot / Franklin's

that's what hooked me back in 89'

or try Unbroken Chain from Mars Hotel. Can't go wrong there.
