I'm fairly new to radio in the grand scheme of things. For a lot of years John Peel was the only person I'd tune in for. But I was pretty impressed with the way Radio 1 honoured him, and many other DJ's there drew me in. I think the shows that filled the John Peel slots are great. Rob Da Bank, Huw Stephens and Ras Kwame.

Mary Anne Hobbs is great aswell :) I dig her experimental show a fair bit.

But aye, even if I'm in the kitchen through the day I'll pop it on and always hear a few good songs. Long may it continue :)

Listening to "Keeping it Peel" - it really is a great tribute, loads of lengthy taped clips of Peel's shows with some of the selection and variety of music you'd get on Peel's actual programmes. As for his links, I think you could almost pick any of his shows at random and there'd be the same funny, warm, intelligent and self-effacing bumbling that only Peel could do:)

Those were the days, there won't be another quite like him:(

There's a tape recorded:'Radio London' John Peel show from Saturday 1st July 1967 free to download if you go to the 'Radio London' website.
'Radio One' was the pathetic response to the shutting down in the summer of 1967 of all the Pirate Radio Stations that had broken the BBC monopoly of radio broadcasting.Radio One may have tried to sound like Radio London but it was phoney.John Peel,Tony Blackburn,Kenny Everett,Simon Dee,Ed Stewart etc. they all sold out pioneering pop radio to join the backward Aunty Beeb.Hence: 'The Who Sell Out' Christmas 67 album release which lampooned the moral void of said DJs & used the now shipwrecked Radio London Jingles!.

Rob da Bank is the closest thing we have to Peel:) It was great how he took over Peel's shows in 2004, now he's developing his own style, his shows are always worth listening to, I've discovered loads of great new stuff through him:)
