And see that's the thing, several billion Windows USERS, using windows how windows wants you to use it is about all one can do with windows. Than again come to think of it I've heard the average human IQ has been dropping the past few decades so maybe that's for the best.

    -Dharmony

PS Come to think of it why I am even arguing about what several billion people most of whom don't even know what a computer does beyond what their programs tell them it does do. I hate when this happens. Right back to topic.

I don't know if my browser is displaying Tefloneddie's post right, but if it is, then ... thats not cool. I could hardley read it. Here is what I got from his post.

"Ahhh, this is a nice one, Linux thread, how about a start of a personal forum for Linux user? Also skip, if you want a hand with a sever, you really don't want anything with GUI. GUI causes servers to lag which in-turn causes crashes and things. Command line shell is best OS for a server. You can use a GUI if you are not to bothered about stability, but GUI's can cause incidents. If you want an easy to use OS for your server you should use either Debian, Free BSD or *I can't believe I'm going to say this* Fedora Core. If you want any more help, feel free to pm me. I'm also working on my own Linux distribution for servers and I could program it a little to your needs "HippieLinux" lol. Hope this post helps you somewhat skip. And for any others, I'm here to help also for any other Linux troubles. Also skip you really need to update your vbulletin if you believe everything in the world should be free. Ahem i can organize that for you to."

Skip I can assure you Linux is FAR more secure than windows.

i will also support anyone who uses ubuntu. I'm not amazing but I'm good enough to install, remove, update, update the distro release, and fix simple problems.

if anyone has an older computer I can help them set up a DSL install, or a minimalistic ubuntu install.

I also know alot of cool programs lol.

    I said that once, too.

I have been using Fedora and Fedora core as my single, primary, stand-alone (NO WINDOWS) desktop for about 2 years. Yeah, I have been microsoft free. I started using linux beside microsoft back in 2001.

I will never go back. If anyone wants to know why Linux is 100x's greater than Windows I will be happy to explain exactly why... if they can follow me. ;)

Yeah, I love my linux!!!!!!!! I've learned so much more about computers, OS's, the Internet, and security since I started using it 2 years ago.....it's amazing how much better it is.....I love the fact that it's fully customizable down to the smallest detail, and I can pick and choose what packages/plugins I want, it's easy.......windows doesn't even begin to compare.......and when Beryl is stable, shit.......*drools over eyecandy*

Ubuntu rocks!!! Just got a new laptop. Am downloading the CD to install now. I have an alternate CD which would install just fine but I want a live CD to burn for friends anyhow. It is a DELL Lattitude X300. I learned on Linux. Debian. I did my first install on an old laptop. It ran. Slow but it ran. On Windows it crawled. Anyways. I heartily recommend Ubuntu for anyone wanting to get there feet wet in the Linux world. I like Debian and Ubuntu is based on Debian. But Ubuntu is more user and newbie friendly. Then if you want to check out the rest of the Linux/Unix world you at least know a little and won't be so frustrated. If I can install Linux by trial and error on a decrepit old laptop then ANY one can install and configure a modern computer with Ubuntu. It is easier than ever. I did a walkthrough post a while back. UBUNTU is Free and EZ to use. Or some such title. Feel free to append it and correct any mistakes I made or whatever. I was a newbie writing it for other newbies. So, I probably made a few errors. I was trying to save others from some of the install mistakes I made. Especially the configuring after the install. I don't claim to be an expert. Far from it. I am just a grandma who thinks butterflies are wimpy and penguins are cute. I am still learning. And that is what makes Linux such a great operating system. It allows one to learn to configure and customize to their hearts content. If you crash your system the worst you gotta do is reinstall. So, of course back up all your important data. Life is about meeting challenges and growing and learning. Did ya have a few bumps learning to ride a two-wheeler? Yeah! But you got back on and pretty soon ya was racing down the road and doing stunts. So, why stay on that three-wheeler and not go where ya want to and miss out on all the fun.

    Windows is a trike....Linux is a bike...and Ubuntu is a motorbike!!!

    Peace, Cricketlind

being tired of struggling with windows' (at the time, 98) bugs and instability i decided in 1999 to try linux. in 2001 i installed a mandrake 8.1 which - after years of kernel, software (from tarballs) and nvidia modules upgrades, difficulties and curses to put all the hardware at work - is my system of today. linux has been my choice for years, so i think i've come to this forum to stay.

it's years that i cant install software from rpms, binary packages dont run because of glibc (i have 2.2.1) and compiling has become quite difficult - and substantially my goal of installing my operating system ONCE IN A LIFETIME (hardware life i mean :p and mine looks like he doesnt want to die for now) failed, so i find myself again with the eternal dilemma: what linux flavor.

my choices are 4 : 1) slackware because i am accustomed with it (i also have a P200 on which i run a drum machine and tuxguitar and lives well with slack 9)
    2) debian because... you know why ; 3) suse because it has such a good reputation; and 4) ubuntu since everyone is talking about it.

talking of which, someone installed ubuntu (yes)? any troubles ? does it offer a partitioning utility other than fdisk/cfdisk?
does it contain the nvidia drivers ? particular issues ? ease of software installation, i mean, it's easy to find suitable packages?

some partisan of the other three above distros has any particular reason to think they are better than ubuntu?

    my machine is an athlon 600 , 640 m sdram , a nvidia card GeForce4 MX 440 AGP 8. sound? an ISA sound blaster 16 !

Almost all the new Linux OS's come with a graphical partitioner.

Picking a distro is like picking a color. Whats your favorite color? Everyone has different tastes and needs.

    1) Slackware - very fast and stable. slightly behind in "bleeding-edge" software like older kernel and X - works really great on old machines but requires too much configuring. lots of compiling.

2)Debian - another great choice. fast and stable like slackware, but not as 'lightweight'. much less configuring but still some needed. no compiling needed to install new programs.

    3) OpenSuse - stable and powerful. requires almost no configuring and very integrated GUI. this distro is not really meant for media fans who need mp3 codecs, DVD players, and video codecs, almost impossible to make an OpenSuse media computer. Also not a good choice for anything under 700mhz with 256mb RAM. some compiling but mostly binary.

    4) Ubuntu - This is based on Debian and runs well on all computers with over 200mhz and 64mb RAM. Ubuntu is very automated and easy in comparison with other distros. it is also very easy to get DVD's and audio/video codecs installed. Ubuntu is unique in that it offers both community support AND corporate support from software developers. you should at least try Ubuntu and if you dont like it then you can install something else. no compiling needed to install new programs, all binary repo very easy.

I use Fedora 7 64bit and Ubuntu 7.04 Apple-PPC. My girlfriend uses Ubuntu 7.04 on her 300mhz laptop. my mom uses Fedora Core 5 on her pent4 laptop.

Ubuntu - Kubuntu, whateverbuntu its overhyped nonesense, basically its unstable, doesnt report hardware properly, requires a reboot for every confuiguration change, complete nightmare. The only distro worth its weight is suse

I find suse to be very bloated - I mean, who needs a DVD for a basic install? I use Xubuntu on my laptop (because it was the only one I tried that configured my wireless correctly) but normally I prefer Gentoo.
For anyone that can't live without their Winblows programs, try ReactOS: a GPL implementation of the NT5.2 (so far) kernel. Interesting stuff, but still in alpha.

ReactOS, very interesting. I hope that it can overcome all that bullshit they are facing. If they really start get going, I might have to jump on the bandwagon.
