I think they've successfully navigated the sea of bullshit and FUD coming out of Redmond.. since all their code is GPL and in no way steals any of Microshit's code (why would you even WANT to?) and doesn't use MS trademarks (as far as I know) then they're in the clear. One thing I wanna know about is the support for wireless cards, if it's good (I have an Intel Pro Wireless 3945, quite common, very good Linux drivers) then I'd be delighted to support them by testing. Sadly their site lacks technical info. EDIT: from what I can tell from their wiki, USB and networking hardware are problematic areas. Ah well, not suitable for me but still, might throw them a few quid.
I just installed Xandros on my girlfriends new desktop. So far it seems stable and fast. It is deffinately easy. Xandros is one of the easiest distro's to install and very very easy to install additional software. I will get back to this if I can. g2g
Question for all you linux users... How's this forum look under your OS? Any problems I should know about? How's it compare to viewing it under windows? What browsers do you use (or are available) under your OS?
... oh whoops. i had to show off But yeah. There isnt really any difference in browsers. They all read HTML and javascript and stuff the same. There is Firefox, Epiphany, Opera, Konqueror, Mozilla, Seamonkey, Icemonkey, etc... I even have Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 installed, but I dont actually use it. I havent had any problems as of yet (many years)
Dial up modems and Ubunto and the other linux question. Which one will let me use my dial up modem? Ubunto does not want to recognise my dial up modem.
What brand dial-up modem? Sometimes Ubuntu doesnt show you the device but it does recognize it. It is supposed to be your job to tell Ubuntu you want to use your modem. type in this and copy-paste it here into your next post. I need to read exactly what it says: and this too: Another linux user should pop in and say what to grep that modprobe -l out to. I just guessed that it would be a kmod with 'modem' in the name.
(whine about humongous screenshots deleted in edit) Mepis 3.4-3 works on my Presario R3000 laptop with the integral winmodem, but performance is crappy - I have to redial the server several times to get any kind of a decent connect rate, and it drops out a lot which is frustrating. That version is based on Debian source, version 6.5 is based on Ubuntu source and doesn't work with my modem. I posted another solution to the problem here: http://www.hipforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=261224 , it involves buying a $45 or so piece of hardware but it works great and is very easy to get up and running.
You can get broadband satellite service for less than $100/mo. Good solution if you live in the sticks. x
