Hi everyone. I have a lip ring and two ear piercings, and used to have a eyebrow piercing (which I've taken out). My girlfriend recently got her nose pierced (it's her first real body piercing)... it looks great and we love it, but a little while ago an abscess or wart or something starting growing kinda near it. We are wondering what this thing is and if we have to A) get it removed, B) remove the piercing, or C) if the growth will go away. It had been healing for two weeks before the thing appeared - we figure it probably appeared due either to rough treatment (she had been taking great care of it but it accidentally caught in the towel pretty hard once or twice), or due to a pretty bad sunburn we got while out protesting in Kennebunkport, Maine. Here are some pictures - does anyone have any idea exactly what this is, if it will go away on its own, if she should pick at it, etc?

Also if you need more pictures I can upload a couple more. Thanks so much for any help !! We are pretty concerned about it. She is keeping up her cleaning and everything though, and we're going to go see a piercer today.

ive had many of these. i cant seem to heal a piercing without it happening. what i do is dab it with tea tree oil twice a day, just a drop on a qtip applied to the bump.
i dont know how many times ive said this lol it seems to be all i ever post here ;)
but really, its saved all my piercings except my first two (a navel and nostril) because i didnt know about it.
your girfriend is really pretty by the way :) hope this helps

    Basically, what wanderin_blues said...
With a lot of new piercings, the skin will tend to peel around them. Sometimes, it kinda blisters first (like that). All four of my navel piercings did it, as well as my lip rings. Just tell her NOT to pick at it or anything, clean it like normal (or, again, like wanderin_blues said) and if it doesn't go away in a couple weeks, just go back to the piercer. Good piercers will ALWAYS have a look at piercings they've done, free of charge, and tell you if anything's wrong or if what's happening is normal. It could also be metal allergies, in which case, they'd probably just switch it to titanium for her (most piercings are done with steel, which contains small amounts of nickel). But if it doesn't go away, it could be scarring, and the piercer will tell you what would be best - probably to rub Vitamin E oil on it, because it shrinks scar tissue, and it's a pretty small bump.

ok so basically. Last night I tried tea tree oil. I applied it at like 6pm and then again around1am before I went to bed.

I woke up, and the bumps are HALF the size they were yesterday!!
    this shit works.
    I recommend it!
    thanks wanderin_blues!

okay, thanks so much for the answer. i wasn't sure what to search for at first, that's why i made this topic hehehe. i did some research and it looks like a Granuloma (look it up on wiki or google)... we've been doing hot compresses and applying some cortisone cream and its been helping a bit. thanks for the great responses, nice (in a way) to see that this problem is pretty common. we'll pick up some teatree oil soon. thanks again!

Tea tree oil and vitamin E (from the gel caps) worked for me. I've had it a few times when I stretched my cartilage piercings.
