Hi Sideshow Bob. Uhhhmmmm..... beanies/any hats are great for dreads. They help them lock up cause they rub on your hair and help them knot. Also will help to ease the sideshow bob look! However... Do your dreads feel sticky? If so, think about how much wax you used, and whether it would be a good idea to try and scrub as much out as possible before using a hat. You don't want to leave sticky shiiiit in you nice beanie Other than that, welcome to the family. arty:
So what should I do to them? Anything right now? Just palm roll them (just put them between my hands and go up and down with hands right?) and comb the tips? Oh and is it good to roll them with my index finger and my thumb?
They're probably a bit delicate right now. A little bit of palm rolling to neaten them is fine, if you wish. But remember, it's not necessary. Don't panick, don't feel like you have to do stuff to your hair all the time, just relax, and enjoy having a natural hairstyle. Takes a bit of getting used to, but remember that your hairs knows what it's doing.
Yea, I've just waited so long and now that I've started em I'm like.....what now. But despite how ugly some people may think they are going to look, I'm already loving the locking that's been taking place.
sweet! a wool beanie or something will help a lot with the sticky upness. your gonna look killer with dreadies! now just let them do their thing, good luck edited for engrish.
Oh, and I was told to push them back before I put the beenie on. Should I do that, or just let them lay flat all over my head. (You can see in the pics how my hair looks as though it is going back, because I wear the beenie over it like that) Also, when should I shower next, aka wash my hair and how should I go about doing that?
if you want them to sit sort of back over your head, then keep them like that under the beanie, but i prefer to part mine down the middle so they stay to the sides. its jsut a matter of preferance. what kind of soap so you have for washing your hair? you just get them wet then if you have bar soap, rub it in your hands and massage your scalp between your dreads with your soapy hands and rinse. if you have liquid soap like dr bronners, you have to dilute it or it will be near impossible to rinse out. i dilute my dr bronners like 12 parts water to 1 part soap, so quite a lot. but youll find out what works best for you. then do the same thing, pour it on your hands and massage your scalp. or if you have some sort of bottle with a pointy tip like those hair dye applicators you can sqeeze in right between your dreads onto your scalp, that works well too. its your scalp you want to wash, not the dreadies themselves. the soapy water that runs off when you rinse is good enough for the rest of your hair.
I use Dr. Bronners Tea Tree Oil. And I suppose I'd like for my dreads to just sit to the sides, but I'm really not sure. Also, what would you do to take care of the loose ends and all the hair that is around the dreads, and makes attempts at attatching to other ones.
Those're gonna look badass man =) I don't think it matters if you 'push 'em back' or just let em be when wearing a beanie. But I never really wore anything when mine were new so I wouldn't know firsthand. But the shower thing - wash when you feel it's necessary. It all depends on the person, just go easy on the first one. I personally waited about a week before washing. But whenever you feel it's time.. especially if your hair starts to get dirty/greasy, grease lubricates the hairs and makes it harder for it to knot. Residue free soap is the answer =) And they WILL fall out a bit, or even a lot, just don't worry - it'll all pull itself back together in time =)
How long does it last? Or at least how long did it last you? (Im guessing it varies from person to person)
wow you look great with dreads! Even if they are standing up like Bart Simpson!!! They will drop, trust me mine did the same and they are now flat flat flat!!!
Yea, I don't know how well the roots will stay together, but it looks like I'll have the most trouble with them. Also, my big question is: When I palm roll, I roll both ways right, then at the end I always roll hard to one direction to tighten it up?
