I agree with one of the posts here, Coltrane is a little boring sometimes. Where is the Sonny Stitt? Pick up Kings of Acid Jazz, it's two of his albums mashed together on one cd. Sort of like Grant Green but focused on Sax or Early Soulive with Sax. You might wanna check out Soulive if you don't know them. Funk band with jazz chops. Eric Krasno is incredible, he's pretty young too.
Copper scroll that was a very thorough and great list. I would add Art Blakey as well to the required listening. Thanks for throwin Mingus in their, Ah um is like candy.
Soulive puts on a GREAT show. I saw them at the New Orleans jazz fest this past spring. On record, they are listenable, but you should see them live. You will be pleased.
i really like Go-Go Ray, the Drum Counselor (of the band Mike Dillon's GoGo Jungle out of Kansas City)....not too famous but that is one world class jazz drummer. You should see his one handed drum solos....they beat the shit out of anyones two handed solos ive seen lol.
Louis Prima Louis Armstrong Duke Ellington I'm not too into it yet myself, but yeah, those guys are great the Leaving Las Vegas soundtrack is full of some great soft jazz tracks as well
the two most frequently recomended jazz albums for starters are: kind of blue - Miles davis Time out - The Dave Brubeck Quartet
I guess they reccomend Time Out because it is one of the more accessible albums to people who don't know much about jazz or how to listen to it, but it definitely would not make my list of the best albums.
Skerik's Syncopated Taint Septet (Skerik plays in Les Claypools Fancy Band....the dude from Primus...Skerik is world class funky jazzy gooey taint) Their album "Husky" is superb.....seriously superb
I really like equinox from john coltrane. the bass and drums are amazing. Ive also heard the jazz group heavy weather is good.
