ok, yeah. i'm a girl, and i listen mostly to music with male singers, but i lovez me some ani difranco and kimya dawson and bjork, some no doubt, and a few others. but really most female singers annoy me, unless i'm into frivolous music at the moment (like riding in the car music, or dancing music, you know, where the lyrics don't matter), or if i'm either loving life and want music about how great it is to be happy, or i'm pissed at a boy for some reason. as far as music about life in general, or about things that are important to me, or music that is not about stupid shit, it just seems like there are more bands with male singers. i listen to basically the same music as my male friends (modest mouse, slipknot, tool, nirvana, bob marley, green day, system of a down, sublime, pink floyd, gorillaz, etc), plus the "girly" music, and i have a lot wider taste than most people i know anyway. i love having as much variety as possible (as long as it isn't absolute crap) so i have stuff like jpop and south american music and music from cartoons and even some christian rock. but most of my favorites are the same as the favorites of my male friends.... another problem with music made by bands with girl singers, is they way it seems any girl in a rock band has to incessantly try to prove how hardcore she is. *coughavrillavignecough*. a lot of girl music seems less about the music, as an artform, and more about the female/her voice, as a product. and i understand why a straight guy might not be interested in hearing songs about being in love with other straight boys, even if they are totally cool with gayness, it just wouldn't really appeal to them, would it? SO MY QUESTION IS: do boys listen mainly to music with boy singers for the same reasons that i do? if there were a band/musician who happened to be a girl, who write intelligent lyrics on subject matter other than their relationship with their boyfriend, how hardcore they are, or how much they like dancing... with good music to back up the voice and the lyrics, and a good vibe overall... would that be enough for your average guy to be comfortable listening? i know there are a lot of guys who like t.a.t.u, bjork, hole, jefferson airplane, etc, because it's just good music made by interesting people. and then there are singers like perry farrell, david bowie in his ziggy stage, even the beatles, who have pretty effeminate voices, yet most guys i know will acknowledge how much they kick ass. so yes.please please please share all your thoughtsi am very curious.since i am not a boy i have no idea how boys think. and if you're reading this, you HAVE TO be either a girl or a boy or have been one of the two at some point, and you probably like music, so POST SOMETHING !!
Eh, what were your reasons again? Female singers don't annoy me at all, it's just that most kinds of music I listen to has men on vocals. but I love to listen to folk rock with female vocals and even some good rockin' bands. Seems good rockin' bands rather use male vocals, and maybe it just does suits better. Not necessarily though, I like some great heavy rock with a female singer, who doesn't really seem to trying to look tuff at all. That's mainly a thing in the pop genre I think, or in metal perhaps. But yeah, almost everybody tries to look like a badass in the metal genre haha.
Why wouldn't a guy listen to goddesses like (ahum) Grace Slick Janis joplin Tori Amos Alanis Morissette Rose Melberg from Tiger Trap, Go Sailor and The Softies, plus solo work Apart from that I mainly listen to music with male vocals except for most of the ethereal/darkwave bands I listen to. But that's not because I prefer those over female vocals, but because I like music more likely to have a guy behind the mike. I can understand why for the louder genres, but for most regular rock I guess the male-female ratio is imbalanced purely by coincidence.
i love female vocals. Here are some of my fav' bands from the 60's with female vocals: jefferson airplane - grace slick big brother and the holding company - janis joplin united states of america - dorothy moskowitz serpent power - tina meltzer rotary connection - minnie ripperton reign ghost - lynda squires michele - michele o'malley ivory - christine christman fear itself - ellen mc ilwaine and the bands with mixed vocals:mamas and the papas, peanut butter conspiracy, birmingham sunday, the 5th dimension, eternity's children, the sunshine company and of course:joan baez, joni mitchell, karen dalton, melanie
I love female vocals, in fact ive been on the look out for more bands with female vocals- in particular the metal genre because most on the guy singers in metal are not to my liking. Some bands Ive found with female vocals are: Lethian Dreams, Ancient, cradle of filth- nymphetamine, the only song of theres i actualy like. So if anyone knows any metal bands with female vocals- please tell me. Anyhow, im quessing about 70-80% of all music uses male vocal, so theres bound to be male singers that both men and women can enjoy, so I dont think its co-incodence that most people, men and women, like bands with male vocals.
Just off the top of my head..... The Distillers Vice Squad The Priscillas The Donnas Blondie Penetration Me First Hazel O'Connor Kirsty MacColl No Doubt Evanescence Skunk Anansie
Hole Mazzy Star Garbage Dresden Dolls Mostly Autumn Jack off Jill L7 Carole King Rasputina The Cranberries Sonic Youth(the Kim Gordon songs) Fleetwood Mac(once Stevie Nicks came in) Rilo Kiley Sheryl Crow Cat Power The Raincoats Queen Adreena Jefferson Airplane Veruca Salt Kittie The Bangles Fiona Apple Blackmore's Night There's so many great female artists and fronted bands, but above all, one of the most important muscians of the past 50 years, the Bob Dylan of her gender: Patti Smith
Well, I am also a girl, and I've discovered most of the bands I enjoy listening to have male vocals. It's not that I prefer male vocals over female vocals, but the bands I take interest in usually just have male singers. That is NOT to say I don't still love my Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin, Joan Baez, and many others. Heart is another example of a band I like with female vocals. I can't speak for a guy, but none of the guys I have ever known stuck to certain aritsts because of the singer's sex. As far as singing about relationships and such, when my favorite bands sing about women, I still enjoy the songs. I just think about guys instead of women. You can still relate to the artists, even if you are female and they are male, or the other way around.
i prefer male vocalists because i prefer vocalists whose voices are rough enough and strong enough to stand up to the instruments. not many female rockers make it (to where they're heard anyways) who can do that. those who do i enjoy, janis joplin and debbie harry come to mind, are far outnumbered by male vocalists. a beautiful or quirky female voice is enjoyable to listen to sometimes, like sarah mclachlan or joni mitchell, but my favorite genre is alternative rock.
Prism, I understand what you are saying but I still think there are some good female artist out there. You just have to look harder for them  Also I think the reason for this is the music industry and their attention to market everyone, but especially women as an image, so they are just looking for a pretty girl, who people will like to see more than listen to. Sad, but true. I particularly love Bjork, Tori Amos, Ani Difranco, Fiona Apple, Brazilian Girls, Nina Simone, Anja Garbarek, PJ Harvey, Goldfrapp, Esthero, Zero 7 and the other one's I can think right now sing in Spanish, so, I'll just end it here
Brazillian Girls is one of my favorite bands, and out of all the more recent bands I've seen live, (besides Lightning Bolt who were amazing, of course) Sabina put on the best show I've seen next to Yes, and never missed a note. Her voice is perfection, even if some of their songs have lame lyrics. Then again she sings in like 5 or 6 different languages so who really cares? Check them out Prism if you havent already
Also, you might dig Deerhoof as well, if you like weirder music. The little asian lady sings, good music right there
Hmmm Do you like Paramore? Evenescense are good, Within Temptation and theres that other band... Hmm i cant think of the name. The Fights another one. Mostly they put the girl as singer which i dont like because girls can do other things too!!!
