creditable SW are ad-aware, spybot search n destroy, zonealarm. All are free at download.com and complement each other i.e. they're not complete as stand alone.

A site to help you resolve this is Wilders Security Forums which will mention other free and creditable SW like hijackthis, etc.

    good luck

symantec is another good one, they can do a free scan on your computer, though anything more involved than that does require you giving them money :(

Here. This is free. It is supplied by Canonicle and they will give you a copy on CD and even SHIP it to you for FREE.

All you gotta do is put the CD in the drive and restart your computer.

    1. Go wireless. The router will supply you with a hardware firewall.
    2. Turn on Windoz Firewall (assuming XP or newer).
    3. Spybot Search and destroy. (Run once a week, more if you go seedy places alot)
    4. Windows Defender.
    5. AVG Antivirus.
    6. Avast.
These are all freeware. They all work well together on my machines.
I also find CCleaner works well without destroying things. I've also been playing with Winpatrol lately. It Seems to be a stable well built utility. With Avast and AVG running I've actually caught myself going out looking for trouble. It's kind of fun watching to see if AVG or Avast will lock things down first. I used to have viruses on my machine all the time. Now I just keep them on a disk. When people piss me off I give them music.

isn't it funny how windows is easily infected by music and video?

Ok, so what if you have a virus that AVG and Avast dont know about. You really dont know how good a virus scanner is and you can never ever know because the virus will be stealthy and hidden until the bitter end.

Not all viruses will "crash hack super 1337 fuck you over". Some just log your website passwords, registry, and credit card numbers. Some might just do simple things like give you popups or supply you with spam.

Sometimes you will get a slowdown. How can you really know if the virus slowdown is worse than the virus scanner slowdown?.. acually it doesnt matter.

Just get rid of all that crap altogether. click the link in my post above and you wont have to deal with any bullcrap.

Adderall, I completely agree with you. I'm looking at picking up another machine and giving Linux a spin. From what I've read, once I'm used to it I'll be running one version or another on all my machines. As far as AVG and Avast catching everything, they most likely won't. However they do both offer updates almost daily. For a long time that fact has made me keep Linux in my thoughts. My biggest fear with Linux is I've heard hardware driver issues can be a real challenge. I don't really know. If I were to buy a HP nc6000 (I already own one, so I could run them side by side. Also so you can look at the specs. and see whats in it) would it be a smooth install so I could start learning about the system or would it be a struggle from the word go? Anyone want to be a mentor and win one more over to Linux? I know all the easy questions, I've been asking them for years.

have you run a live CD, that'll tell you which HW support is lacking, then u could go online and check for drivers, etc

liquana, All I've done is read about Linux and wish Windoze was a thing of the past for me. I'll do a G-search and see what I can figure out. At this point my question is don't I need to know which version I want to run?

Trend offers one of the best free online scans I use it about once a month along with my avg and other protection. It does require a broadband connection though.

Linux and Apple might be more secure, but if you want to use Photoshop and some of the other graphic high end software, and not spend extra or have them not patch your Apple version, you just may have to stick with MS. MS/Windows can work for you but you have to do your housecleaning faithfully. It's not that hard but it does take a committment.
