i really don't just give thanks on one specific day! but my family really enjoys that so its good to be with them and eat smashed potatoes since i'm a vegetarian! :) but really i don't praise the whole coming from somewhere else and taking someone's land and spreading diseases idea.

Hmmm... That's an interesting question. I actually hadn't ever thought much about the idea of celebrating Thanksgiving. My family has just always celebrated it.

I can see how someone would be opposed to the idea of having a "day of thanks," as if it's not okay to be thankful any other day of the year, or how someone would be offended by the idea of celebrating the Europeans coming to the Americas, killing Native Americans, causing illnesses among them, and taking their land. Maybe it's not so bad if you just think about it as a day of remembering everything you have to be thankful for, instead of a day of remembering the Pilgrims coming to the "New World."

I'm definitely going to have to think about this, although I'm not sure I can just go home this Thanksgiving holiday and say, "Hey, mom, I've decided that I don't believe in Thanksgiving anymore!" lol.

I celebrate the original pagan tradition of gratitude to Mother Earth for the Harvest. All of our major holidays, minus the newer war ones, are "borrowed" from pagan rituals of honoring the seasons and the gifts they bring.

Yeah - we celebrate the fact that the Puritans had finally buggered off!

To me it's just a day to stop what we are doing, gather together and enjoy what the earth has given us....a time to celebrate lovie of one another, love of Mother Earth and sharing all of her wonderful things with each other.

Thanksgiving is more of a harvest festival here than anything (we even have it at the right time of year!) This is probably the first time in many many a year, I'm gonna end up missing the 'Fall Fair' from my hometown - it was a big part of our holiday.

I don't see anything wrong with Thanksgiving if it is remembered as a day to get together and share what you all are thankful for. Now that it is mentioned about the pilgrims, I would rather think of Thanksgiving as having nothing to do with them. Everyone is thankful on days other than Thanksgiving, but who usually stops what they're doing at work, school, and so on to sit around a table with family and talk about it? That's what Thanksgiving is for :).
