Has anyone else wondered why going to college seems so popular? I've been wondering recently, what's the point? Is it to have a secure financial future, or to be happy in a career?
i know how you feel, ive been contemplating the same shit personally, i dont plan to go, at least, not right away after i graduate what i want to do with my life doesnt require a college degree, i just want to travel, and eventually settle down and start a communal farm and have a big family of freaks like me i think it can help make the financial aspect of life easier however, if you are an average american, even with financial aid, college can put you in debt, forcing you to get a high paying job, one that is likely not too pleasant. i have nothing against education, i just think learning goes beyond the classroom but overall, its the financial factor that people go to college, since they believe it can give the the opprotunity to get a high paying job it all seems too ugly to me
A lot of times it is that you can get a more secure financial future, doing somthing that you can possibly enjoy, or at least not have to work AS hard to get the same money. I was in college for a year, yes I am in debt because of financial aid, but I still want to go back. I'm currently working a pretty well paying job, BUT it is laborious (8+ hours a day of building pallets of products 30-70 lbs each, 7 feet tall while driving machines around). I also just think education is important in general too though, the more you know the better off your life is.
I'm in college now and I.... yeah, I hate it. It seems pretty pointless to me right now and I'm pretty sure I want to actually see the world and what's out there before I commit myself to an insanely high education. But.... it's easier to go to college when you're young and all these scholarships and stuff are available. What a strange time.
I'm studying to become a doctor, so yeah, college does have a point in my case. But I can def. see your point--alot of people at my school are "trust fund hippies", meaning they're liberal and hip but they also have mommy and daddy with deep pockets to back them up just in case college doesn't work out. It seems like they're going to college because they wanted an excuse to move out of their parents house, rather than to actually learn something. I'm a senior now, but it wasn't until this past January that I realized medicine was my calling, so I know how you feel. But really, college is like anything else in life--it's all about what you make of it.
Economically, it's an investment the same as any other. Human capital rather than physical, but it's still (for most people, depending on what they take/debt loads) a good investment. The lifestyle beats working by a fair margin, in my opinion. It's fun as hell, to be honest. Plus, nobody wants to be stupid. And while people can learn just as much on their own, and university won't necessarily make you smart, the odds of coming out with more knowledge than you would doing something else are significantly higher. And there's always the chicks. You'll never have as many attractive girls living in as close a proximity as you will at university.
Sometimes it fuckin sucks and drags on, but mostly i love what I am doin because of the people I have met, and the education it is giving me to pursue a career I really aspire to do. I plan to take different courses at colleges in BC too. I just like it alot. I love education. That doesnt mean I am ruling out LIFE education, of course not. But I am extremely excited about what I am doing at school.
Look, my major is Pharmaceutical Chemistry, and i study it because i freaggin' love it really, it's my passion. Secondly it will ensure me a better future, thirdly, i live in a country were the State's University is free, and a good one too. It's a third world country, here, if you don't have college education you're doomed basically... In countries like USA or Canada you can have decent salaries or survive with mediocre jobs, down here, you basically starve with those... God I love Uruguay. Good luck girl!
I think college is too pressed upon kids. I mean, I've always known I wanted to go to college and since I was young have told anyone who would listen to me that I wanted a pHD (and still would if being in the academic world doesn't make me question my intelligence so gosh darn much!). However, people in my high school who would have been much happier doing something else or going to trade school were pushed into college. It's not fair. Any career I want is going to require at least a masters degree, but a year of my projected salary is barely above a year at my college (before scholarships). Oy But it's worth it to do something that will give back to the world.
College is somewhat overrated for some people that is, some people are better off there and some don't need it, there are a lot of sucessful people that are college drop-outs, like ummmm Bill Gates.
unfortunately, it's necessary now...the government wants all these kids money so that they can go to school and who knows if they're even gunna get into the field their studying in. I like school-but I hate knowing it's making me more and more broke as time goes by
College = Specification - In my opinion. High school is just general knowledge that you need to know in order to get by in our society (well, U.S at least). College is more to expand your knowledge and study what YOU want to, not what the goverment wants you too. Iv always been a firm believer or learn by doing but now-adays you need a card to play, and that card is called college.
They push school in places where there is no profit motive. A student's tuition in BC pays about a third of his costs; the rest comes from taxes.
Depending on the person, both (though it guarantees neither). As a highschool drop-out, I sometimes wonder if I should be advising others to go to college (I did end up going)...but here is what I would say: go if you feel any inclination to do so, but pursue what you are passionate about. If you just go because you are "supposed" to, you will only have 1/10 the experience you could have had. But it can provide a way to pursue your passion that few other routes in life can equal. Along the way, you will be exposed to ideas, people, and challenges you would never have encountered otherwise. College is like nothing else in life, in my limited experience. It's temporary and transient, but it will shape you in ways you can't foresee. I haven't yet heard anyone say they regret choosing to go to college, overall.
Eh??? Who doesn't want to be more knowledgable? Being more educated means you have more freedom. How? Well, you have the freedom to move around different jobs. The mind is wonderful and should be used to benefit oneself. I had a stupid relaxed attiude and didn't finish school but now I'm studying for a diploma and then after go on to get my degree. I study media production which includes..TV production, sound production, photography, film studies, web design, psychology, sociology, thinking otherwise, research methods all over the course of 3 years. It's amazing. After doing alot of drugs from hash to heroin to cocaine and speed, I now use my brain more sensibly. I now know I want to continue my degree in photography If you have to work to survive in life you are better off getting the job that suites you best. Now, how are you going to get certain jobs or the job you like or want without certain education for that job???
i think college is more to get your mind to work the way a certain career path needs it to work. I'm getting an engineering degree right now and the classes seem to be more about get your mind to think, rather than taking in specific information. If you don't want to go to college for yourself then don't go. I'm addicted to knowledge i love it more than anything in my life. I go to school to work my mind and to get it to work in new ways, not to take in information and get a good grade (uuhhheemmm medical degrees, ha ha us engineerings are such elitist). It's your life if you don't wanna go to school don't, but always know there are consequences to your decisions.
I'm in college because I love to learn, and I want financial security. Plus the atmosphere is a freaking blast. Of course I go to the University of Kansas where everyone is a hippie..
