What causes this?

Sometimes I'll be listening to my ipod on shuffle and I'll think of a song I really want to hear, and the next song that comes on is the one I thought of. Sometimes it does it 10 times in a row or more, it's really cool. But I can't actually think about it, the thoughts have to come to me. If that makes sense. As soon as I start thinking, "Ok, I think this song will come on next." it doesn't work. I have to want to hear the song, and not think about it actually coming next. Sort of subconciously, I guess.

    Does this make sense?

What could be making it happen? Is my subconcious telling me what song is coming next, or is something causing the songs I want to hear to come on?

This is the same question I've asked myself lots of times--how can we know which it is? Maybe we will someday. There are a lot of things that can't be explained.

I think it's happened to me with the radio too before. Life is so weird sometimes.

You realize that shuffle doesn't mean random right?

Your brain is probably just picking up on the algorithm your shuffle is using. There's nothing supernatural here (because supernatural doesn't exist).

The algorithm it's using? I'm a stupid little 14 year old, do you really think I know what that is? Explain please, lol.

An algorithm is simply a well-defined series of instructions for accomplishing a certain task. The term is usually used to refer to computer program routines or mathematical processes.

And DirtyVibe is right--the "random number" generator is of course not really random in the strictest sense. However the "random" sequence generated by that algorithm is just as unknowable to conscious awareness as the interactions of the little balls in the rotating cage used to pick out lottery numbers. If anybody's mind, even their subconscious mind, were able to figure out the algorithm and its results, they would have to be psychic. DirtyVibe is using a 50-dollar word to make it look like he knows more than you, but he's leaving out a major part of the truth in order to win his argument.

However I agree with DirtyVibe that "supernatural" doesn't exist. Everything that happens is totally natural. The word "supernatural" is one folks came up with to label stuff they couldn't explain along the lines of "this thing rolled over and kicked off that thing, which in turn dropped on this other thing..." and so on.

But just because there's no such thing as "supernatural" doesn't mean the explanations for everything are as simple as what DirtyVibe would like to believe.

The algorithm used in the iPod shuffle gives preference to certain songs and his mind was probably just picking up on which songs it gave preference too so if it gave preference to 5 songs out of 65, and he guessed one of those 5 every time, then he'd probably have something like a 1 in 10 guess rate, and by the psychological phenomanon of confirmation bias, he'd overestime his actual guess rate. That's what's going on here.

Ok I'm sorry but that still makes no sense to me. And I don't have an iPod shuffle..I just put my iPod on shuffle. But I don't think that makes any difference does it?

What about when you think of a song and turn the radio on to hear that song playing? There's no algorithm in a radio that's not even turned on, is there?

Everything in this life is energy, everything we experience is through frequencies, so you're probably tapping into the frequency of a local station.

It's common knowledge that radio stations play the same songs all the time..

You guys seem to mistake coincidences for things that have higher meanings. There's a mental disease that's a symptom of, I just can't think of it right now. It's very common in religious people.

but not just any station, i mean stations i never really listened to, i'd just know.
and there's no way i'm saying"omg thats so psychic!"-i know it was probably coincidence, but it's just weird and bizarre that im not the only one. and, hey, when i was 9, it gave me one hell of a thrill.

And just what IS RAND_MAX, DirtyVibe? The random-number generators I'm accustomed to seeing have a max of a million or more--adjustable for the application at hand. Even if the number of songs got to be around half a million (which I believe is beyond the capacity of most current model iPods), you're not even getting close to the point where the results would tend to get skewed.

The fact is that you're taking somebody else's statement, which you don't completely understand yourself, and you're basing a wild-ass extrapolation on the idea that "it will skew your results." You haven't shown how much skewing is possible, you haven't calculated the probability of being able to correctly pick the next song in the sequence, you're ASSUMING that somebody is making a sampling bias without any evidence for this, and the bottom line is that you're making the same leaps of "logic" as some of the religious folks I used to hang around with--except that in your case, you've chosen science/math as your religion, so that makes your conclusions holy and unquestionable. And if science/math is your religion, you obviously don't even understand your own religion very thoroughly. I guess you rely on your "priests" to make sense of it for you.

    Damned fundamentalists--you're all alike.

I do this all the time... with the radio, or when the phone rings I know who it's gonna be before I see who it is. I also know the phone will ring before it does sometimes, and other things... I'll know when someone in my life is upset, when something's going to happen sometimes, etc.

I just kind of smile to myself when this happens... :) take it positively.

^^ mmhmm! i can pick up on emotions like THAT.
one time i called my friend and her gramma said "just a minute.." and before my friend even answered, i felt pure dread. when she picked up i just went "what's going on?"
turns out, a family friend died and she cried on the phone.
i can also pick up on wonderful vibes, and i instantly get happier!lol. i'm like a sponge, when anyone around me is upset, so am i. happy? me too.

    It's called vibes...

I learned about it long time ago when I first started hanging around with my hippie friends.

We're empaths. :) I do exactly what you described... I absorb everything, too. For the first week after my sister started back to work, and she would come home, I would develop a migraine because of the stress she was bringing home... it was awful.

I do this all the time. It's hard to know what's mine, and what's everyone else's. lol. Sometimes I get so overwhelmed I wanna just crawl in a hole and bury myself.
