Should I go "home" for the holidays?

I know it seems awfully early to be thinking about this, but I feel like I need to make a decision soon and get a plane ticket or reservations either way...

As most of you know I'm living about 2500 miles away from home right now working in one of the most beautiful locations in the continental U.S. Well, since I've been here, no one from back home (an exception is one woman who I've become really good friends with b/c her daughter was one of my students...she emails me A LOT) has really made an effort to keep in contact with me...no family, no friends...no one. I have to make every effort to send out emails, make phone calls, write letters/post cards, etc. and frankly I'm starting to realize that I'm pretty dispensable to them. I'm a LONG way away from everyone and they don't really seem to care at all.

Saying this, it's beginning to get closer to the time that our season here on the island is coming to an end...we have a break from Thanksgiving until about the middle of February. So...the 12 of us are trying to come up with something to do with that time....most people are going home for the holidays...there are two or three of us that aren't really wanting to go back home, so we were going to just travel and have the rest of them meet back up with us after the New Year. I'm still trying to figure out what to do...flights out of LAX are much cheaper than flying out of Detroit, so it makes the most sense mathmatically to just leave from here than go back home and fly out after the New Year...

I don't really have much of a reason to go back home...no one seems to even really care either way that I'm here or there...If I do go back home, I only want to go for a couple of days...and is it worth flying all the way there for just a couple of days??? No one will fly here to visit ME for a couple of days...

*shrugs* Just sort of getting my thoughts out. Does anyone have any opinions or thoughts to share?

Stay and actually enjoy some proper partying with the people you work with.

 

Hmmmm.....could you (if you do not mind me asking) let us know what the deal is with your family??? Was there a falling out or something?

 

The plan is to go travel somewhere together...we're working out logistics, but South America (Peru/Brazil/Colombia) is the most likely location for our travels...

As far as the family thing, we're just not close...I've asked them a million times to send a couple of my things out here to me and they haven't taken the five minutes time out to do that...I am begging them to visit...they aren't even considering it. I feel sort of obligated to come home since it IS the holidays, but then I begin to think how ridiculous the holidays are with the family and then it's, like, OK...why do I want to put myself through that for the 24th Christmas in a row??? LOL
