....well now th at this forum is under fashion and crafts I am more inclined to post in here too.

I had dreads a long while back but really didnt take care of them, i went through the complete neglect method but didnt really bother making sure the hair was clean :&
anyways to cut a long story short the whole underneath of may hair was so matted it gave me headaches - so I gave up and took about 4 hours untangeling the mess.
hadto cut alot of hair off under the rest of my hair.

Hair is nice and grown back now, and the rest of my hair is down to the bottom of my back. I descided to braid my hair while i was in Ghana to keep my hair seperated better when i started my dreadlocks again.

The braids have helped to start knotting the roots quite well and have been in for about 3 months now. I have 3 small dreads that i started in the shorter bits of my hair.

Im not using and waxes of shampoos, just some natural soap I got while I was in Ghana ( it workds great )
just wanted to know if anyone has got any tips on starting my dreads properly.

    welcome to the obsession.

backcombing is very helpful if you want to get some established knots, but make sure to really make sure you have the roots backcombed as best you can.

some will say sleeping in a stocking will help, i dont, but my hair is only 5-6 inches long

i started mine about 3 weeks ago

    edit - pix plz!

my hair is very long, which is one of the reasons it knots so well i think.
for years i was annoyed at having to brush out huge knots, its actually quite nice not having to do that nay more.
I have a few pics up from about a month ago, il go look for em...

If you want to continue going natural I have several suggestions (my hair was also very long when I started). With long hair you gotta REALLY be on top of keeping it separated... when I first let my hair go I separated daily, sometimes even twice a day (after awhile you won't have to do it nearly as much). Definitely keep it clean this go around and separate after every time you wash it. It takes sooooooo much time.... although I started seeing little dreadlings after a week I still have a ton of loose after after a year and half. But I really believe it's worth the natural route for both the overall health of the hair/dreads and because of my own personal opinion on the reasons for dreadlocks.

I HATE the term neglect... it really gives natural dreads a bad name. Dreads can form naturally WITHOUT completely neglecting them.

thanks for the advise, I have started back combing a litte more, and it appears to be helpin a little.
I have added a few more dreads to the from of my hair......mny hair is all crazy scraggily sizes. there is this one dreadlock that reaches just to my nose.....its cute, coz the rest of my hair is super long.

thanks for the compliment mrsw morrison.
Iv been putting off getting them back for a very long time but im glad that they are knotting up again.
