    The Natural debate.

Everyone on here seems to make it seem that if you don't go natural your dreads won't turn out and you will be less of a spiritual person or something along those lines. People may not have come out and said it exactly as i'm stating it here but I find that it is often implied. I believe everyone goes through there own journey with there locks and to say one way or a certain method is better then another is kind of arrogant. Sites like dreadhead and knotty boy aren't my favorite either but they inspire alot of people and maybe even dispell some negative myths, and in my opinion that's not too bad in my books. I started but no longer use wax in my hair but I know plenty of people that swear by it and they have beautifull, non greasy, healthy locks to show for it.

I have posted many pictures and gotten all kinds of nice compliments from lots of kind people but lots of those people have all bashed the idea of backcombing and waxing. The method of which I started my locks with. So really, is waxing and back combing all that bad?

dreads can turn out using wax, but the risk isn't worth it for me. My best friend uses a little bit of wax to hold down his stray hairs and hasn't had any problems. I don't think it's a good idea but if it's what you want to do, go for it.

i dunno who or what,, but from what i see on here,80% of the dreads were back combed and rolled. sure some may lie an say there natural but anyone that knows, knows there not.

big difference in the way natural looks as opposed to rolled and back combed.

as far as less spiritual??? fuck them..

I believe that certain methods CAN be better, depending on WHY you want your hair dreaded.
I know people that like the look of smooth small even dreadlocks, so they went and had them professionally done and maintained them often. I know people that have had fake dreadlock extensions put in because they liked how they looked on them. I know people that got their hair backcombed and used wax, because they wanted them to look a certain way and not be fuzzy.
Personally, the only thing I do to my dreadlocks is decorate them sporatically. They are just another area for me to wear jewelry and decorate myself. I like how it looks. But I don't do anything else to them. The reason I stopped combing my hair is because I decided I didnt want to force my hair to do something it didnt want to. My hair simply did not want to be combed. And I kind of thought it silly to give up combing, yet use a comb to get dreads. To me, my completely natural (aside from my decorations) dreadlocks aren't really spiritual, they're just my hair being its natural state.
    :)

im with you, khiyal. i have had waxed and backcombed dreads and loved them dearly but ive come to the realization that i dont like to do maintenance on my dreads, its just not me. they suit me better if i just leave them the hell alone.
but one of my friends likes to palm roll and take care of his and has started putting a little wax in to control frizzies. his dreads look great and suit him perfectly.
i backcombed another friends dreads very small and neat and tightly and they suit her just right too.
dreads have different meaning to each person who has them. for me, it just feels like the way my hair is supposed to be, like its natural state. plus i hate fussing with my hair.
its not about spirituality for me and its not about appearance but if those are the motivators for other people, then thats great. who im i to judge them? besides, some people really like working on their dreads.
    peace :)

I'm growing natural ones, i'm around 4-4.5ish months in.
I don't really care how people get dreads, most i know have backcombed, i know 2/3 peoples with naturals

I just like waking up in the morning and slapping on my beanie, not really caring how the hair underneath looks.

To me it's not a matter of who's right or who's wrong..... people are all individuals, and they all have their own opinions. People should do what they feel is right for them, and not to please any one else. If someone wants to wax their dreads, then they should have the right to.... If someone else thinks natural is the way to go, good for them. But I dont think people should try and force their notions on others..... it never works out, and ends up just causing bickering and disagreements. That's my philosophy.

I don't understand why people over there have to be such dread nazis. I like those boards but it's ridiculous to be so rigid about something as trivial as hair. I love my dreadies but in the end, it's fucking hair man, not worth fighting about.

    Amen to that.

Some people that treat their hair like religion, tend to fall into the same trap as most religions - they think their way is the way everyone should be.

If dreads are about 'freedom', then let that include the freedom to do what I wish to my head without being judged as lesser by those who chose a different path.

yeah there is a lot of negativity over there, but cool photos and cool stories sometimes.

more activity too, this place is kind of slow sometimes...or maybe i just need a life :)

regardless, i dont want to name names, but some of the guys over there are very VERY elitist about their uber natural dreads. not to mention dont bother asking for help cause all that they will say is "leave it alone" haha.

Well, I guess I opened a big o'l can of worms with that little rant. I'm shocked how many people responded so quickly.

You guys and girls are great people.

Everyone here should listen to "the Meters" and groove all night. It's a guaranteed good time everytime.

    Thanks for all the feedback.
