We are a family of 3 soon to be homeless in Northeast PA right now, throwing this out there in the hopes someone will see it and respond and be able to help. We're planning to move to Colorado when we are finally forced to leave here. We have a van and an enclosed trailer and a load of 8 cats.

I've been scouring the web looking for info about where to camp for free, at least for a while until we can find suitable property to buy (<$5000 or less). I've found a little info here and there, but mostly about camping on government land (usually 2 week limits.)

We hope to find land that has woods, water and potentially farmable, where we can live in a tent, trailer or build a shelter on eventually.

It would be great to find people in Colorado who could help guide us in this pursuit and maybe host our camp for a while.

Both myself and my husband are disabled. Hubby gets SSI payments, which is our sole source of income, so we're quite poor, but we manage to survive (barely :p)

I'm looking at our pending government-sanctioned-forced-homelessness as an opportunity to ditch all the bullsh*t and the unnecessary trappings (and bills) of living in a house (cable bills, telephone bills, etc etc) and save up a little to buy land where we can build our own life, grow our own food (as much as possible) and basically be left alone. Very tired of dealing with assh*le landlords, trouble-making neighbors, and so on..

Hopefully someone responds with some useful info :)

Bad time of year to head to Colorado with camping plans. Snow should be falling within a week. Won't see grass until June.

The whole state gets a lot of snow? I did a little research and from what I could find it seemed like the southern side didn't get a whole lot of snow and freezing weather. Seemed to be about the same as NE PA where we are now. We've gotten maybe 1 good snow a year here so far, but we are in a river valley, not on top of the mountains. Not planning to relocate into the mountains or far north in Co. I want to be able to farm :)

I'd appreciate knowing from peoples first hand experience what the climate is like around Pueblo and further south and the southwest side around Durango & Mesa. If I recall correctly there's quite a bit of USDA Zone 5-7 on the western side.

    Thanks :)

Yeah, from my experiences from living in Crested Butte during winter(pueblo being 2 hrs. away) and travelling, visiting friends in other parts of the state including durango
it is (pardon the language) at night at least colder than a witches tits in a brass bra
seriously dont camp there in the winter unless u have a well insulated camper and a reliable heat source

I live in nothern colorado and the winters do get quite cold, but if your prepared and have a camper that you can install a small wood stove , winter camping can be quite enjoyable, plus there is standing dead trees everywhere in the mountains there should be plenty of firewood till spring. Quite personally winter is the best to camping. Oh yeah watch out for frostbite it really hurts.

go to www.realtor.com and look at the prices of any land in colorado. it is all very expensive. If you really want to find land that is cheap, and really want to get away from all the bullshit, you need to check out eastern klentucky or weestern west virginia, or even texas has alot of low priced land. Anyplace near a city will be higher. The further away from the city, the cheaper the land

I've camped in Mesa Verde and Durango in January. Both were windy and cold. It's not horrible if you have a good tent and bag, but it'll get cold.

Northern colorado near the wyoming border actually has some land as low as $900 an acre, but you must purchase these in 30 acre parcels it's a rare find . Problem is the land is very hard to farm, mostly clay up there and very windy.

I'd definately listen to hippiehillbilly, the lands more fertile the weather more fair. plus give it fifteen years and that land in colorado will be nothing but mass devolopement.
