I have been hearing that fox Farm Ocean Forest is a great organic soil mix, but that it can be too hot of a mix for seedlings. Additionally, I have heard that white widow, as a strain, is sensitive to nutes. I'm thinking of starting white widow seedlings out of 16 oz plastic cups with a 50/50 mix of fox farm and perlite. Once the plants are root bound they will be transplanted into a 66/33 mix in 4 gallon pots. What are your thoughts? Do you think the 50/50 mix will still be too hot for the seedlings? Thanks in advance and peace out
what if I make a soil mix of 30% dug up topsoil that has been sterilized in a microwave, 30% fox farm ocean forest and 40% perlite? would that be better for the seedling?
Yeah it's too hot for seedlings, I've had trouble with it and young plants in the past. Just delute it like you said and you should be fine, but honestly it would be better just to start them out in some potting soil with added perlite. I would also add about some dolomite lime to teh ocean forest when you do use it, to buffer the pH a bit.
Just buy sterilized potting soil (no nutes added) - for $2-3 it is worth it. The oven/microwave sterilzation is messy and can throw out some nice odors in the house. Grow the seedling (20 oz cup) and after a few nodes transplant it into the diluted fox farms soil.
I ended up mixing the fox farm with some inorganic soil with very low levels of N P K. All 5 seedlings are looking great. They broke soil 3 days ago and are starting to grow their second set of leaves. I was originally planning on an entirely organic grow, but I think I may end up using some of the cheap soil when I repot the plants in their final pots.
I use half Promix and half Fox Farm with about 20% added pearlite and about a 1 cup of lime per 5 gal. for clones from my EZ grow in 20 oz. cups, then lose the pormix at first transplant into 1 gal. pots.
