My laptop had Windows XP pro on it when I bought it. I installed Ubuntu in the free space to dual boot. Then Windows updated itself and got a bad case of cyber flu. When I deleted the viruses either it deleted needed files or the virus screwed up the bootloader in Windows. Well I had a program that allowed me to access Windows from Linux installed. The virus got in my linux partition too. I mean bad. Even after cleaning up the system Ubuntu was acting up and hanging and crashing so I had to nuke the dang thing and re-install Ubuntu. Now no Windows. I know I could install Cedega to run my games. Maybe? Also I have other programs that only run under Windows. Wine will not run them. At least not yet. Does anyone know of a cheap source for legal Windows CD's or iso files. I know about some of the pirate sites for not-so-legal iso downloads. But from what I understand if you copy a Windows CD in a burner and then try to install it will mess up your system as well as some of the iso files on the internet. I cannot afford to pitch out 300 bucks for a off the shelf retail copy of XP. And even if I could find a CD to borrow or get I need the product key to type in when the install program asks. Thanks, and peace to all.......Cricketlind
Sending PM now. I am sorry but I wont post a link. For those other things that dont work in Wine. Sometimes you have to install it in Windows first. Then copy the installed files over to Linux. Now you can link to the executable and run in Wine. Sounds weird but it works. I have never had a Windows program not work this way. The problem only occurs with the installer, not the actual program or emulator.
usually laptop computers make you buy the damn thing with windows on it , if it is the case then you already have legal serial number and all you need is the installation media , which you can probably get for few bucks from microsoft , the oem one. some makers have a hidden partition who contains the installation files for xp like ibm / lenovo , hp . if you have 1gb or more of ram you can consider using vm to run the other os , which is safer than dual booting. as for the other questions i'll take the 5th take care and good luck and lot of love.
