I've encountered a fair number of hippies; it's just fairly rare.

Whilst at Burning Man there happened to be a hefty amount. That is based on communication with them and not solely on their attire.

In general I would have to agree with PsychMyke, although not entirely. What constitutes a hippie and existing in the USA is a hard thing indeed. My disposition and choices are very hippie oriented with a scourge of variances but laced with hippie concepts.

my disposition is hippy-like in nature as well. But i also consider myself a raver.

Plus, to me hippies are members of the radical new-left from the 60's. It's a term used to describe a group of extremists that existed at a certain time in US history. And since that time period has long since past, so has the true definition of the term hippie.

Case in point...every "hippie" i meet nowadays wont touch LSD...on the sole grounds that it is synthetic...ignorance..sheer ignorance. The original hippies were hippies because of LSD. Without LSD the hippie movement would have been dust in the wind. LSD was the lighterfluid that fueled the zippo that was the 1960's. It was the drug that tied them together and associated a group of people with certain music, political views and lifestyles. Same with MDMA and the 89-92 ravers...it wouldnt be a movement without the drug. Now everyone deems themself hippies if they wear hemp smoke trees, listen to phish and hackysack. I hate labels anyway so my opinion is def. biased

where did all the hippies go??? the hippie movement died like a fad - maybe thats what it was. or did the government do their very best to squash them out like little bugs.

i feel like a modern day hippie. undercover waiting to strike. except this time i think we are smarter - we can learn through the hippies of the sixties and their mistakes. oh shit, what the hell am i talking about - no-one cares any more, there is no such thing as a hippie any more or anything that might resemble one. even those who do lots of psychedelic drugs can still manage to forget that something has to be done about government control and tax. they just come down and go back to work or school or whatever. no-one has the time or the ability to make any real change so no-one bothers to try. who can blame them - the world might as well end while we forget about why we should even care.

most people are so stupid that they believe them when they tell us that we live in a free country.

the world could be a much better place and it is truly sad to think that saving our world can be a fad that goes out of style.

Good observation Myke, I notice certain hippie-like people nowadays too would never touch acid, and actually specifically preach not to do that certain drug.

people who preach not to do acid are just jealous that someone is having a profound experience that they enjoy while they are too afraid to try it or too afraid and fucked up because they did try it and had a bad trip because they were afraid.

i understand the purist thing. they are afraid of the chemical i guess. people get so hung up on certain things. the physical effect from acid is none existent and the psychological effect is very much subjective.

LSD is good for some people and those who dont feel it is best for themselves may want to respect others when it comes to their right to make their own decisions in life. when people argue that LSD is a bad drug the are also saying that people who have done or still use LSD are crazy or fucked up. sure there have been many cases of people admitting that LSD has messed them up and i am sure in some way it has. but the truth still remains that many people have benefited in many ways from this drug and they deserve respect and the right not to be seen as someone with a mental disability.

i guess what i am trying to say is that the people you say are "hippie like" are not hippie at all. maybe they dress cool and seem hip enough. the idea that LSD should be seen as something horrible does not take into consideration all the people who enjoy it and use it wisely. because they lack the compassion to understand this they lack one of the more important aspects of being what i am sure the true definition of hippie is or was.

Being hippie is state of mind, not the outfit and how do you look. There is still plenty of hippies, but we learned some things, maybe it is still wise to stay "undercover".
When you are pretty exposed, the governments and all the mighty war lords tend to crush you, and beeing powerfull like they are, they will. Look at the world war 2, all the ocupated countries in the begining had some kind of secret resistance movement untill they grew stronger to form official military units to openly confront the agressor. Maybe we are in similar period, but one thing is for sure, more and more people are awaking! Drugs are ilegal, but you can still find them everywhere, more than ever before. There is more and more people using them well, rather than abusing it. With Internet, the comunication is much, much better than those 1960's hippies had, so the word is spread more and more every day!
