Lodui > after 35 yrs it's not a fad man.. it's still going on.. it's just branched out to the country.. like it was suppose to do.. that was what we were striving for.. to live the dream.. we are living it and now it's time for the younger ones to carry on where we began.. it's not near dead... do you wear jeans n boots.. well no one did before the hippies.. we took all the can nots n turned them into can dos.. it was the age of enlightenment for us, we became enlightened and strove for peace and equallaity.. what are you striving for beside a job.

I dont want to be a hardassed bitch.. but I can get that way..I never ran from a fight even if the fight was for some one elses rights..

    Ok well....

There's two sides to this as I see it. Sure the sixties were a pretty hectic time in terms of the new social ideas coming out during that period.
The ideas of greater personal freedoms, women's rights and fighting the "oppression" of the government.
Full respect to those who made real changes, well done.

However, I don't think hippies should claim responsibility for everything great that's come from that decade. After all, let's not forget that whilst they are known as a time of fun and general lovin, for many people the sixties were actually pretty bad.
Where were the hippies when the government went crazy and knocked down all the old housing districts in favour of unsafe tower blocks that would be demolised twenty years later because they were simply unlivable? Where were the hippies "crusading for righteouness" when the government destroyed 2/3 of the rail networks, paving the way for the huge mess that is the transport infrastructure of today?
Look at the Isle of Wight festival, the rioting and violence that broke out from a campsite full of peace lovin hippies doesn't exactly make the movement look good.
Ok, before you go attacking me, these points are just examples, im not building a case on them, so dont bother with the aggravation.

In the end you had two choices, you could either give two shits and make a real difference by getting involved in the politics of it all, or, you could "turn on, tune in and drop out", live a life of free love and drugs and occasionally go to a rally or protest, maybe chain yourself to a tree, get beat on by a "pig", whatever, it's not making a real difference, if you get to the point where a physical demonstration of your ideals is necessary, it's often too late. It's no use just standing by and letting "the man" get his way then suddenly turning around and saying "no, you can't do that, i'm going to stage a protest". He will laugh in your face.

I'm not blaming the hippies, the point I'm making here is that just because someone attacks the lifestyle you believe in doesn't mean you have to get all "righteous fury" on their ass, in many cases this doesnt help. You just end up looking like an idiot. I admire certain "hippy" ideals. After all, who doesn't want peace? I'm all for loving your fellow man (or woman). I don't think there is only one way to do things, I believe that there's an alternative in ever situation. Free choice... fantastic! Please, all those on here who would call yourself "hippy" think about what the word means before you go (sadly) raping it's corpse (unfortunately, i feel this is what the word hippy is nowadays, a corpse) A true "hippy" wouldn't go picking a fight. Think about it.

I'm sorry, but I take issue with you complete dismissal of today's youth. Do you think that your generation is the magic generation, the only one that knows the truth and that all subsequent generations are slaves to the system? Brainwashed by the media? Too busy bopping along to Britney Aguilera to give a shit?

DO YOU HONESTLY THINK WE BELIEVE EVERYTHING WE'RE TOLD?!?!

It's exactly this kind of treatment that you objected to as a kid, right? You fought for what you believe in and I believe any good person should do that. Where I disagree with you is that I feel you are picking a fight for no reason now.

I've talked to many adults who were there "on the frontlines" I know what I'm talking about, my information doesn't come from a pepsi textbook with an agenda.

The youth of today have more in comon with you than you'd be willing to think. I think it's sad that you don't have any faith :(
I sincerely hope you find some.

Dammit, I was going to leave this thread, but I can't. There's just too much shit flying around to leave. :D

Ok, shameless, I think I see why you're not understanding. You see, we may not be hippies or believe in the hippie lifestyle, but that doesn't mean that we don't respect hippie ideals. I like to think that everyone here wants peace, but many of us also know that it won't happen. I want to protect the environment just as you do. I recycle. I try to do my part. However, that doesn't mean that I have to fall into a dead fad. I support human rights and greater freedoms for the common man. I'm an ultra-liberal, but I'm no hippie. I see the hippie mindset as naive and out-dated for this day. It was not as effective as it was supposed to be, therefore a new mindset and altered ideals are appropriate for this new century.

If you can't accept slightly altered, more appropriate ideals than your "hippie ways," then you are no hippie yourself. Just go get stoned and do whatever it is you do. You're doing no one any good here by attacking people who see the world a little more clearly than yourself.

Dont patronise my religious beliefs just because I made fun of you.

Besides its not about approval, its about the search for truth, Siddhartha would understand.
