Luckily my friend who has quite a bit of experience is going to help me start by growing my own stuff, however I have a few questions. Try and bare with any inaccuracies I make in my lingo here, but yeah. Each "Cake" I guess is made from a container? How many ounces would I be able to produce with about 6 successful containers? (Standard or whatever regular size they provide you with on shroomery). 1 pint size possibly? Also how is the trip in comparison to acid from somebody whos done both? I could get what you mean if it's just a whole different type of trip within itsself. Just figured I'd grow them myself, for the fun and experience of it, and for the use. Can't be bothered to buy them off people, 1/8th is going for $35 bucks around here. Seems rediculous. Anyway thanks for any advice with the questions I asked. I'm just wondering when the time is up, and hopefully it comes out alright, how many ounces I'll have or should have for tripping.
Well there's a lot of factors that go into what kind of yield you'll get sw0o0sh. You're probably going to be using the PF tek from what it sounds like, which means you'll be using 1/2 pint jars filled with brown rice flour and vermiculite. These cakes might produce around 1/8th a piece but it's difficult to tell. It's all based on the genetics you end up with and how optimal the growing environment is. If you're going to be growing mushrooms from spores it's a craps shoot whether or not you get any certain genetic trait so things like yield will be different based on that.
Yeah, looks like tricky stuff as far as sterilization goes, but I'm not going to settle for any half ass techniques and actually try to succeed like this unlike my friends who seem to fail at step one, haha. Also helps I got someone good helping me here, and a website aswell to clear up any confusions if my friend can't. Didn't know the yields were so small, I see people producing bins of these mushrooms at a time, thought it was producing quite a few ounces not just an eigth Lot of work for one trip then. I know the spores I'll be using are legit, it's just a matter of how everything else is going to flip through. So if a 1/2 pint cup only produces an 1/8th, and i have 12 pint jars, hoping at least 8 survive from contaminents, than I'll have a full ounce, hopefully. And then since I'm not buying myself it should be guaranteed a tad more potent, huh? I'm excited, I won't be too bummed if I fuck up the first few times though, trial and error never hurt.
Yeah you should go into it expecting no yields really. Some people have amazing results from PF tek but that is not the norm. Good luck and I hope you've got a safe place to grow them.
horseshit straw and grain spawn in a tray gives the ounces you seek, pf tek is simple yet complicated and doesnt cut it on yields in my oppinion. rye is shit cheap, horse shit is free and hay is 5 bucks a bail, on the larger scale i think the mycelium gets happier and seems to have less contams and fruits more willingly for some reason.... peroxide also helps.
i bet you get more than just an 8th from a single 1/2 pint jar. Some of the grow logs i was looking at the pictures showed alot more than just an 8th from a single cake. Not to mention you can flush it 3 to 4 times.
Just depends is all I'm saying. Really I wouldn't expect any amount on a first attempt or even a first success. You can get more than 1/8th per cake but then again you look at some of those yields and figure the dry weight is only about 1/10th of what the wet weight is. lostdazed is correct in that colonizing rye and spawning it to pasteurized horse poop and straw will make for bigger and better results. It's more potent that way b/c of the sufficient nutrients and you usually get more and bigger mushrooms. That being said it's good to use PF tek and understand what mushrooms need in order to grow before you move on to other things.
You sure the difference is that great between wet and dry because Ive always heard that wet weight is only like 3 times more not 10
I'm sure of this. A mushroom is roughly 90% water, 10% fleshy mass depending on type. Cubensis mushrooms definitely fit these rough percentages.
In some strains it's 8% mass....what ever the wet weight is divide it by 10 and that is the dry in most cases. J.C
I just started growing mushrooms this past summer. I am on my second grow. About 10% of the wet weight is pretty accurate. Oh yeah and just skip the PF TEK. Go straight to grains, mush eaiser and better results IMO.
Yeah I've read up on my shroom growing several times now, I'm really getting a grasp on the instructions way better than when I made this post... , realizing the importance of sterilization now. What makes me nervous though .. in end there's so many places possible to fuck up lol. I think I am just going to start with punching 1-2 holes per container then allowing it to colonize. I'll stick with mastering the PF-Tek to get a good feel of the importance of sterilization before I move onto horse shit, I'm growing it in my home so concealing it will be a concern. I mean, it won't be found as long as there isn't an odor coming from my room. I don't know, I've read quite a few guides from other sites since Shroomery.org is down right now, I think i'll mix in the precautions that both guides ignore into one. Probably going to make that glove box where I inject the spores, dust mask, microspore tape, gloves, all that. Would a hair net be necessary? Then my friend who gets decent yields with PF-Tek methods is going to help me out, so I think I may have a chance; but yeah, I am going into this with a negative outlook so I won't be too disappointed if I fuck up. I think the only thing that may piss me off is having to buy more spore syringes, or just the time lost in general. Does anybody recommend starting off with about 3-4 cakes instead of doing all 12 at once? I think I'd be too much of a noob to go into it with big numbers, imho. It seems as though 1 or 2 always will end up contaminated, but whatever. Just going to get the supplies and try my best to master this. Unfortunately I won't be using the pressure cooking method, so sterilization will also be more of a problem I suppose.
Use no less than 4 holes or your cakes will take longer to colinize give contamination more of a chance to grow. I personally boil my cakes, I don't feel like getting a pressure cooker. Just add water ever 15 mins and add about 20-30mins more cooking time and make sure there is a thick towel under the jars. Also a little extra water in the jars wouldn't hurt. If you do chose to boil then brown rice and brown rice flour is the only option, as wheat must be pressure cooked, and i think rye too but not 100% sure about rye. J.C
I go all out. just made 12 wild birdseed jars the other day, iduno why bcuz im almost out of room and i got 3 tubs already lol.
Pressure cookers are lovely, we got a National, a Burpee, and a presto. setting up a clean room at the moment and am pondering how hard it would be to fabricate an autoclave for the next run. throw away the dome with the holes in it, go get some tyvek envelopes from the post office and cut out some squares to replace the domes, when you shoot it up cover the needle hole with a bandaid.
Boiling is strange. If you're really careful about wiping the tops of the jars and doing it in a clean room your chances of contamination will drop. I've heard that boiling the jars can be from 0-100% effective. I feel it's adequate if you're willing to be extra precise and careful. Maybe I was just lucky. The only jar I've lost was from me knocking it over and exposing the substrate to air.
