okay so I started my dreads by backcombing, but only roughly half of my head actually stuck, so the rest have just been being neglected into dreads, and they are forming very differently (knotting at the base and leaving really long whisps above the small knots) so could I now back comb dreads that are forming from neglect to encourage the sections and whatnot?? what would you d

I did that with my dreads.... I backcombed what I could, but had quite a bit of loose hair at the back of my head and the nape of my neck that I couldnt quite get backcombed well. I just left it for awhile, and it started sorting itself out on it's own. After it 'sectioned' itself, then I backcombed it from there since it had grouped itself off without my help. It made it pretty easy, and now I dont think you can even tell a difference between my backcombed dreads, and the one's that I neglected for awhile and then backcombed.

ya can do whatever ya want, just let em go & they'll grow in nicely every one different
i have some with whispy ends others with loops n balls n some a combo of both
post some pics of what they looklikenow
but really ya cant accurately say you mixed backcombing & neglect cause neglect is allways part of the process nomatter what
neglect is the process, backcombing only tamestheearly stages till neglect takes obver

and i agree, neglecting dreads is why they happen...but to neglect from the start forms dreads in its own way contra that of back combing

When I say I neglected my locks, I mean that I just let them do their own thing.... when I said backcombing them, I mean to say that I manipulated them into how they were sectioned intially, and pretty much told them "you hairs go together like so..... now that you are how I want you grouped, now do your thing".

I know that once the hair is sectioned, backcombed, twisted 'n' ripped, neglected, dread permed or whatever then they will do what they wish, and how they want to..... I think that is the beauty of dreadlocks. You can section them off however you want to, and in the beginning you might think they are going to be a certain way, but in the end dreadlocks do what they want, and you never know what the outcome is going to look like.
