A woman that owns a local craft shop makes her own yarn and when I asked how she did it, she refused to tell me...anyone know how to make your own yarn? I think it'd be such a neat thing to make!
I wonder why she'd refuse to tell you? It's a bit odd.... but anyway. If you want to make your own yarn using animal fiber, you can use a spindle and some raw wool (preferably combed) to spin into your own skein, and dye it either once it's spun or still in its 'fluffy' state.
I'm suprised she refused to tell you, it's not like she has super top secret instructions... What you'd want is a drop spindle I'm pretty sure. I quickly googled some links...there are many more pages about it though. I might try to spin some yarn this winter http://www.mielkesfarm.com/spndl_inst.htm http://www.handspinning.com/lollipops/spininst.htm And here's a link with directions on how to make a spindle from old Cds - http://www.interweave.com/spin/files/CDspindles.pdf
You can find a drop spindle with instructional dvd online too. I think the dvd made it much easier for me than if I had not gotten it. There are a lot of sellers of fiber for spinning on etsy.com.
Awesome! Thanks! I might get a drop spindle and make yarn for my knitting/crocheting friends for Christmas!
