Maybe people, both young and old, just find them talented. Nothing wrong with that, is there? And what's with everyone always thinking Pink Floyd fans carry this arrogance with them? Pink Floyd is my favorite band, along with many other older bands, but I don't consider my music taste superior to anyone else's.
If anyone bothered to read into anything I was saying it's pretty obvious I'm a floyd fan (FLOYDIANslip) aside from that, I link to my band in my profile which is called SYD, and my signature is a quote from the song "Free Four" off obscured by clouds. I just think it's silly for someone to try and hate on a fellow floyd fan because they aren't as well versed as someone else. I have SHITLOADS of floyd stuff, but that doesn't make me a better fan in any way. I was fortunate to have someone that turned me onto some of their earlier albums when the only songs I knew were radio play. In fact, there may be less of these so called "fake fans" if more people took time to remember when they weren't a "super-fan" and were just getting into the floyd. And to the poster(s) who were hating on the kid at the waters concert: at least the kid was asking what the songs were, and was at the show in the first place! It shows an interest in the music. Something so many of you seem to have lost now that you know everything about the band and have heard all their songs. P.S. - Buy a record player and listen to the stuff... it's the only way to hear it.
Well, wait, I am a bit confused. You just said Pink Floyd is the worst band out there, but you are a fan? Even before I responded, I noticed your username and was very confused, as I figured it was connected to Pink Floyd. I never saw your signature until you mentioned it, but that adds to my confusion . Are you just trying to play with our minds ? Anyhow, I agree with you. Any Floyd fan out there, whether they know everything about the band or barely anything, deserves to be treated with respect. People need to get off their high horses, and I am not just talking about Floyd fans either. I noticed some fans of nearly every band out there are the same way.
All that is needed is to listen to PF music and the excellence is there for all to notice. Check out The Dark Side Of The Moon and the Wizard of Oz. On the second lion roar cue PF!!
To the OP: I kind of understand what you mean though even if you are being a little cynical. There does seem to be this attitude of "I listen to old rock and therefore I am totally awesome, man". It's sort of like the whole Che Guevara thing. So many kids running around wearing the t-shirt with his face on it "just becoz it is cool lololol". They have no freakin' clue who the guy is or what he did. I think this also happened with Green Day after American Idiot came out. Everyone was like "I LUV GREEN DAY OMG YAY!!11" and you ask them what their favourite album is and they say "American Idiot" just because it's the only one they know because it went mainstream. Anyway, it's nothing to worry about, but again, I understand what you mean when you say you feel kind of ashamed to say you're a fan of Floyd just because you don't want to be associated with the fake fans.
I have this on dvd, entitled A Sync in Pink. I think it was actually recorded from AMC if you can believe that. It does take a bit of imagination to see the similarity, but it is interesting nonetheless.
Saw the Australian Pink Floyd show last night. Now, I have never had the pleasure of seeing Pink Floyd live, except for vhs and dvd's of them live. So, at the beginning of this show, I am thinking to myself, ok, this is just a tribute band. I kept thinking that until the start of the second song, and then that thought left my mind. I will admit that that thought returned every once in awhile, but it quickly left. This show was absolutely amazing, and sounded exactly like what I have heard from live shows on video. I have seen Roger Waters awhile back on the In The Flesh tour, and the guy who does the Roger Waters spot in this show has it down to a t. This show lasted for 2 hours and 15 minutes and was a show that kept me rockin and movin throughout. Sound was excellent, light show was excellent, choice of songs played was nearly excellent. I say nearly as I would have rather heard Dogs than Pigs, and I was hoping for Echoes. Otherwise, the entire Dark Side of the Moon album was played, along with a selection of songs from many other albums. It is very easy to see why David Gilmour endorses this band, as they were just killer. I am very happy I was able to attend this show, since it seems like Pink Floyd always skipped Las Vegas on their tours. If you get a chance to see Australian Pink Floyd, wether you are a fake or real Floyd fan, I highly recommend it. You might think it is just a tribute band, but after 5-10 minutes, that thought will quickly leave your head and you WILL be amazed.
I've read this thread a few times, thinking about the underlying idea. In the live music community, they would be trustafarians, in the Darkheads scenesters, whatever. The ones I have to deal with while at a show can get on my nerves. But if someone is discovering albums cut before they were born and digging on them, especially over radio pop music, what do you care? What do you (OP) have so invested in your own fan-dom, that there is no room for others? I wonder this on fake hippie threads, too. I know you are a teenager, so I could say that if you listen to anything before Division Bell, you were fake. But that isn't true. I have music in my collection dating back to medieval times. I have discs with music that moved across the Atlantic and into what is now Mexico, and discs with the music of Pueblo people. I have country blues, Chicago blues, early jazz, Lomax collections, Woody Guthrie, Arlo Guthrie and Sarah Lee Guthrie. I have Piper at the Gates of Dawn. I have Steve Goodman. Do I have a right to listen to it all? of course. Do I care if someone labels me? nah. I have a life to live. even if they simply like a logo, would you rather see some emo band all over the place? I have a 15 yo son, and he has a taste for Floyd. And a lot of other music. Does this make his taste for it any less than mine? Or his uncle's (who was alive when the first album was cut?) NO. music, at it's best is an eternal communication. Like good journalism, it goes from news to historic chronicle. Music tells the story of where the artist was in that point in time, and there will be people who resonate with it for the rest of time, and that is a good thing.
I used to get incredibly frustrated whenever I saw someone with a floyd shirt at school or on the street, because more often than not they do, in fact, have no concept of the band outside of their more popular albums (talk to me about animals, atom heart mother, and meddle, and then you can call yourself a fan). But now that huge chain stores such as Wal-mart and Target sell their clothing, what can a real fan do? I mean honestly, at least it's getting more people interested in a great band with so much so say and offer.
Exactly. Wether their fake fans or real, it's all good. It helps the band advertise(as if the band really needed help, LOL). Ya know, it is the same thing with the Oakland Raiders football team. You see many youngins wearing their jerseys just because black and silver are good gang colors or whatever. But go up to many of these people and ask them to name a player on the team and they dont have a clue. Doesnt bother me though, cause I hate the Raiders, and I grew up in the Bay Area, lol.
You all act as if there was something special about Pink Floyd. Bands like Sigur Ros make them obsolete.
Haha, kind of agree with you here. Other bands have gone further and are (arguably  ) better. Don't know if Sigur Ros is one of them though. But of course what makes Pink Floyd special is that they were one of the first who made music like this.
Hmm, well, there is something special about Pink Floyd to me. Not everyone sees what other see in music, I suppose. I never could see what anyone enjoyed in a lot of bands, but I am sure they are really something to other people. We all can't have the same taste in music.
Care to say what's special about Pink Floyd? People have done every single aspect of what they've done better.
They're one of the first, doesn't that make them special? Personal taste is sometimes hard to explain, it's just how music can make you feel. Sometimes it makes no sense to others, like I for example have with Tupac fans. I'm aware now his music is really special to other people, even if I don't understand. That's music (and life), mister.
