I'm planning on making a pipe out of something interesting. Probably a large stone about the size of a Coke Can, and I'll drill a hole for the smoke to be drawn, and I'll carve out a bowl that meets that from the top.
My question is, can I simply use a bit of my window screen to put in the bowl? I don't want to use foil and always have to replace it, and mesh would be easier, but I'm not sure if there's something on the window screen that would hurt me... I don't even know what the screens are made of.

Just buy some screens from a headshop. They are cheap and work very well.

How do I know if I DO have a metal window screen, and not whatever other material it could be?

If it melts its not metal.

Just use a pair of scissors to pop out the screen from the bottom of a faucet (like mentioned before) they are already cut round and usually just press into the bowl nicely.
