I need some help from some of you guys. I'm working with the local high school Guidence Counselor to put together a reading list and web address's for any GLBU kids who might want it. She has agreed to put up some kind of sign to let kids know her office is a safe zone. What I need is a list of any books you guys have read that would be good for other kids to read. Same thing with web sites.
I checked with Sam and he suggested this post. Here are the rules he laid out: "some links may be deleted at the mods descretion, no links just to another forum for the sake of it and no porn." I'd like books or address's that deal with acceptance, affirmation, health info, hotlines or other support resourses and empowerment suggestions. What have you guys got...I know several of you guys are in an age group to have used some of this stuff. Anything that you can pass on will be appreciated. Thanks, Steve

Some of you may have grown up in an area where there is a lot of available gay resourses, maybe in urban or suburban locations where there are other gay identified people to talk to or connect with. I live in a very rural area where there are no gay resourses for many miles. The closest gay positive meeting place draws kids from 70 to 100 miles away and its only open on Friday night 6 til 11pm. Some of you may have information about websites or books that could make life a lot more tolearable for these country kids. Please think about resourses you may know of and list them. It could mean a lot to a kid who knows little of what his options are. Thanks guys

As far as I know in Utah(utah and salt lake counties) there was a dance thing for high school gays every once in a while...I think they stopped doing it though, and the crazed mormons probably had something to do with it.

Im in ninth, and it really would be nice to have more gay resources in the area. Maybe there are some, but I just don't know about though.

Thanks Drew, yeah, for the local kids near where I live there's nothing, but just 25 miles north the school has a gay/straight alliance and a high school age only group gathering every friday night operated by the local university. A lot of kids around here are in the same boat you're in . There are some things available but the kids don't know about it.
I also want to find websites and reading material for the local kids if I can... the school has agreed to hand out a list of resources and information if I'll put it together. Can you think of good books you've read or good websites you use? Share them with me and I'll get them to the local kids. Good luck to you, hope you find something local for yourself. Steve

This is a local website that is targetted towards combatting homophobia in Manitoba schools although it is very much applicable to any school. They have a section for students and also a section for teachers and other school staff and it provides information for those questioning their sexuality as well as information for those who may have questions about GLBT life in general.

There's also a list of phone numbers to call if you ever need someone to talk to.
