Does having a army or police force stop war or crime , or does it encourage war and crime ? If you have armys you have to have a big defence industry to supply them , and this defence industy wants wars because selling weapons is the way they make money . Also people at the top of the army want conflict as its the way they get remembered and promotion and if there is no conflict there is no reason for the armys existance . This also applys to the police they want more laws so they can arrest more people to justify their existence , a prime example of this is the lack of logic in the classification of some drugs as being illegal and others more harmful as legal ifits about protecting the public why not ban alcohol or junk food ? we are told that we need armys to defend our country but in many cases these armys are used to attack the people of that country and not to fight foreign aggression . you could take the example of burma I bet people there were told they didnt need guns as they had a armys guns to defend them , and now the armys guns are killing them . This isnt a one off rare case and was one of the reasons that americans had the right to bear arms , to defend themselves from a bad government . The swiss have not fought a war in 400 years we are always fighting wars why is that?, their defence is based on the mass of the people having assault rifles in their houses , why does that work in switzerland and couldnt work here and what does that say about the uk? if you have a media telling people they need lots of stuff and a society based on consumption wont you get more theft , if you lock parents away or make drugs illegal dont you get more theft
You say dont do this people will want to do it... Reverce psychology. My parents tryed it on me saw it on some sitcom...
I definitley think we need a police force. Maybe if they had never been introduced it would be a different matter but now they have been, I think it'd be impossible to take them away. Although it annoys me personally that they spend a lot of time, in my opinion, on the wrong things, I would still feel unsafe without them. I think it's a bit of a dream nowadays that we could be safe in a world without any form of police/army etc. I personally don't think guns are a good idea in any society ... but I've heard that in Switzerland they have a lower murder/robbery rate than here... and nearly half the crime involving firearms is by "criminal tourists" ... so it's an interesting point.
What I don't stand is that smoking is not allowed to be advertised on TV because it increase your chances of getting lung cancer. However, the army is allowed to be advertised on TV. But giving a man a gun and sending him off to a far away country to fight increases his chance of being shot. It doesn't make any sense to me. I think the whole thing about "It's human nature to want to fight" is rubbish! People are always telling me about how "great" the army is whenever I go on an anti-war rant. I just think the whole idea of war is wrong.
I was saying earlier "A peace army" hehe i didnt even notice till i said it.. ironic bt maybe thats what we need.
yes dirk pitt I advocate the repeal of uk gun laws and replacing them with something like switzerlands laws . I dont watch tv normally but visited my sister and I saw a advert for the army and all it seemed to be was a unit of the british army going into some house in Iraq and bossing people around at gun point .
well most people are anti gun you rarely see a gun in the uk , I dont see them as fun things but we had lots of guns around the place during world war two ,and you had hardly any gun crime . I think the problem with weapons is the attitude people have to them , you can go crazy with a car and kill lots of people this rarely happens and if guns are seen as some annoying chore your not likely to get people going crazy with them I think the early americans had the right Idea with the right to bear arms , I dont think that was mainly for hunting or home defence, but to be able to take on a wicked government or foreign invasion . so Im against things like assault weapon bans in the usa , Id return things in the usa to the state they were where you could own machine guns and cannon much like you can in switzerland I know you can with special licences but Id make it more widespread . when people join the army they rarely start killing their own side and soldiers are just members of the public wearing different clothes
I don't really think we can compare it to WW2, cos society then was very different and like you said, the problem with weapons is the attitude people have towards them - which I assume would be very differnet back then. And people would've been more concerned with killing the opposition rather than themselves. And yeah true, but the army have a responsibility with the weapons and are less likely to abuse them.
Well we have a army now thats invading foreign countrys and killing and bossing people about, Id say that was abusing weapons , Id rather see old ladys with machine guns in the uk as a defence against someone coming here to boss us about . And if we have gone downhill and are more dangerous with dangerous weapons today what can we do to go back to the sort of society like the swiss or wartime british .
