I've looked online and seen all the suggestions for falling asleep, but none of them seem to work. The only thing that does work is sleeping pills, but I don't want to take them anymore. I end up feeling so tired and awful when I wake up. Does anyone know of anything that actually works besides pills? I don't have much of a choice in my schedule so being nocturnal really isn't an option. When I don't take anything I lay in bed for an hour or two, tired or not just unable to sleep. Any suggestions?

Have you tried relaxing, I mean not just go to your bed and be relaxed, I mean really relaxed. Don't think about anything, just go straight to bed, close your eyes, that's it.

Here are some suggestions, just in case you haven't tried them already. Regular exercise, of any kind, can help with insomnia. Avoiding stimulants (coffee, tea, amphetamines :) ) is important.

If your mind is keeping you from getting to sleep (you mentioned laying in bed for an hour or two before falling asleep), you may also want to consider looking at sources of stress and anxiety in your life and ways you can cope with those sources. Meditation, especially before sleeping, or yoga or tai chi are all good for calming a restless mind. Good luck! I hope you can get some rest.
