okay I am so sick of all the little comments about me not eating meat and how weird I am when this is how I was raised. I think people who eat meat are fucking weird, I mean eating a dead animal how bizarre and un-evolved is that?

hehe.. you should read "Elizabeth Costello" by JM Coetzee. Or The Lives of Animals.

Coetzee is a great animals rights activist.

I'm not being sarcastic but carnivores and omnivores even more(s) are more evolved than herbivores, and (of course) higher in the food chain.
Being able to feed of a wider variety of things, THAT is evolved!
IMO, they think you're weird since animal products, like a juicy steak or fried fish is delicious (no matter how people may call it, "pieces of cadavers of cruelly slaughtered animals"), and, except for medical reasons, it's very good in a diet (except if you eat it like an american :D)... So they wonder what reasons are good enough to counterbalance those above.
And unless you're a octo-milko-pisceo-(i missed something?)-vegetarian, your dishes are really bland for a normal person.

lol maybe you meant lacto-ovo-pesco, which is dairy eggs and fish. what I was getting at was that when a meat-eater comes into the vegetarian forums, they're generally shunned and everyone thinks they're weird and bad.

well try saying one pro-veg*n comment in any of the other forums and you get attacked left right and centre. If a red-tooth comes in here with naive comments, they should expect to be attacked. It's not like we're laying here waiting to ambush them!

wow... there are a lot of war references in this post. I'm gonna go lie down for a bit.

Eating "a dead animal" has been a necessity for many, and still is for some; that's the reality of the matter. Because of our society's affluence, people have the choice to not eat meat, since they can afford to do so. It's kind of ironic when you think of it. Many veggies will claim that eating meat is destructive to the environment, but at the same time, the materialistic/consumeristic society that we live in, that makes it possible for people to choose to be veggies, is inherently destructive to the environment. If you only want to eat vegetables, fine, but don't get all self-righteous about it.

It's like that for me too, only both my Grandmother's say it. My Nan loves KFC too, which has to be handle with serious tact (though the rest of my family back me up on that one)

    Anyway...

Well I suppose being vegetarian is rather strange to most people, a shame really. But there you go, just part of the package.

Not that strange is necessarily negative, people thought suffragettes and Ghandi were weird.

I agree with that .... i am a veggie , and i get attacked for being one . But i don't realy share fully the veggie ideology.. i just don't eat meat...sure i share vegeterians repulsion of animal welfare...but like you say people should not get self righteous about it , people eat meat and always will.

So lynsey i get attacked from both sides , and i just say hey i do what i like you do what you like. Just think about what you believe and then just repeat it too those that you care to know how you feel. Anyone else just say .... 'why do you care what i do or don't do ??' don't fly of the handle and tell them they are EVIL just be calm and don't waste your energy on them.

do you say that with your nose in the air :p

No, feeling compassion for the suffering of the helpless, that is a true step foward in evolution.

Well somebody has to worry about it! Just because there are "More important" things to worry about, doesn't mean that one cause should be completely discarded. Everybody has to do their bit, and just because you want to be concerned with one thing, doesn't mean everybody else should drop what they're doing and worry about it too. Everybody does their part and we should look at the effects as a whole.

Sure, there are people in the world who "need" meat because they can't get nutrients elsewhere... but those same people still eat considerably less meat than the average westerner, because it's not packaged for them and waiting at the supermarket for $5 a kilo, or however much meat costs these days.

I still have always wondered... I believe in the theory of evolution to a certain extent as I have my own ideals on where theories stop and start... I've still always wondered at what point in time people started becoming vegetarians... hmm.

Sorry, but this is not an indication of evolution. Feeling compassion for a chicken is nothing more than an indication that the individual is hyper-sensitive and has too much time on their hands. Seriously, there's no veggie here who wouldn't revert to eating meat if something fundamentally changed the workings of our materialistic/consumeristic society.

Got anything to back that up?

The only situation I'd eat meat is if the only alternative was certain death and someone had killed the animal for me.
Otherwise I've absolutley no need or inclination to do such a thing. So therefore don't.

actually it is more cost effective to eat veggie. You lose 90 percent of your food source when you sonsume meat-meaning 1000 kilocalories of graingo into producing 100kilocalories of meat-but we probobly all know this so no need for me to go into the food web.

Poorer nations would be able to feed their people if they consumed grain instead of meat because they would have 10 times more food. So while you say it is a luxury to be a veggie most nations think meat is a luxury.

Meat is a luxury in third world nations in the fact thta they have to catch their fish, mussels etc instead of buying it at a supermarket...meat is by no means scarce in third world nations..its a staple of their daily diets
