What could happen if you are taking too much Vitamin C? Is there such a thing?

There is no such thing as taking too much vitamin C. The Nobel Prize winning chemist, Linus Pauling, who was famous for his work with vitamin C, took upwards of 20,000 mg daily.

I personally take between 6,000 and 8,000 daily.

The worst that can happen from taking a lot of vitamin C is diarrhea and stomach discomfort. Vitamin C is not toxic, even in high doses, and I believe people who undergo intravenous vitamin C therapy receive as much as 100,000 mg.

It's a very important vitamin in high doses as it prevents heart disease, boosts immunity, and shields people from all types of cancer due to its antioxidant qualities.

Humans are generally deficient in vitamin C as it is, because unlike most animals (with the exception of the guinea pig), humans do not produce their own vitamin C and must depend on external sources, be it food, vitamins or both.

not to sway you from supplementing, but i'd make sure you get a good amount from whole foods, then add in the supplementation.

since we barely know of all the nutrients in actual whole foods, its hard to mimic them with supplements, so eat a diet that contains Vit C and then move to supplement.

Im not taking any supplements. Im just addicted to this juice and I drink a big carton of it EVERYDAY, and it's like 150% of Vitamin C per 250 ml, so that made me wonder what would happen if your intake of Vitamin C is too high (not that Im doing that now, I was just wondering)

well, i'd caution you to make sure you rinse your mouth a lot to prevent decay of enamel on your teeth - same if you'd be eating the chewable vit c tablets.

    what juice is it?

its an acid, so yea, it can lead to decay and errosion fo enamel. it disrupts the pH balance. just rinse out after you drink or eat some food too

soda will do the same, along with many other things. i'd be careful with all the sugar you are drinking from the juice too

As long as you brush your teeth, you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

Actually there are toxicity and deficiency problems with all vitamins and minerals. I think the toxicity problem from vitamin C is scurvy... you should definitely look it up for yourself!

Wrong -- scurvy comes from a deficiency in vitamin C. Get you facts straight before you imply people are crazy with emoticons.

Again, Vitamin C is water-soluble and NOT TOXIC, even in incredibly high doses. Nobody has ever OD'd on vitamin C. Consider people who undergo intravenous threapy receive around 100,000 mg of vitamin C, while the average daily vitamin only contains around 75 mg.

Thats why I said "I THINK" not "I KNOW." I didn't know if I was right or wrong so please don't attack me. Over an emoticon too...?
Anyways, it is theoretically possible to overdose, this I know

in its time scurvy killed quite a few people

scurvy was also known as "the scorb" you would take antiscorbutics to prevent the scorb. over time this translated to ascorbic acid or vit c as we know it now.

the british would load up their ships with double the required crew because they knew that in 2/3 months time at sea half of them would be dead. it was so bad that they would have to scuttle ships because so many people had died during expeditions.

linus pauling required that mild scurvy manifested itself as plaque on the arteries, he felt that the population was deficient in vit c

vit c is usually pissed out without too many side effects

sodium ascorbate will increase blood pressure if you're not careful and cause too much acidity in the stomach

try calcium ascorbate instead but make sure you take some magnesium too.

like anything too much of a good thing probably isn't good for you.

a word to the wise, loading yourself up with one type of vit might just cause you problems

I haven't been eating alot of oranges lately but hopefully you can get vitamin C from other fruits?

I dont eat alot of berries or strawberries since they are expensive, if i remember right they contain vitamin C and so do grapes?

Ive heard to get the most vitamin C you need it from dietary sources and not supplements.

The word supplement actually means it is to supplement what you should already be getting from food sources and not pills.

I havent heard much success with vitamin E pills preventing heart disease like some claimed.

Dietary sources are much more readily available to the body than any pills.

i've seen some negative results for supplementing vit E vs getting vit E from whole foods.

peppers are high in vit C

whole foods have many nutrients which we have not discovered yet - we know some, but far from all of them and how they work...so it is much more beneficial to get the vitamins and minerals, and macro nutrients from whole foods, rather than supplementing.
