I got rid of my tv and cable a while ago and I've met some more people recently that have done the same. Anyone else? A lot of people I know can't seem to understand how i don't have it or miss it.... curious as to others thoughts.
I'm addicted, I'm afraid. That and my pseudo-iPod. Umm... insert obscure reference to "Fahrenheit 451" here. </lazy>
I went mostly without one for 20 years. Then I started watching again when we moved to the middle of nowhere. Since then we moved back to somewhere and I kept up the habit. There's a couple shows that are funny and I like to watch it before I go to sleep. I don't let it cut into anything else I'm doing (like "OK it's 6:30, I've got to watch the news"). I know it's 99% crap but sometimes when I'm feeling really low it's all I can do. I also watch it on a little 5 inch black and white 12 volt so I don't feel too bad about the power usage and I don't have cable so the limited choices and sometimes bad reception keep me from watching it a lot. In an ideal world there would be no need for TV or computers or cars or taxes or phones or flush toilets but until then I'll watch it some.
I used to have cable, when I just started school, and I was watching it so much that my parents got rid of it haha. But now I'm glad they did, it was a waste of my time. Now I hardly watch tv, but there are some shows that I really enjoy watching, and learn from aswell, so I like watching them I'm proud of you FloydianSlip, well done for getting rid of your telly! Not many people can do that. Peace Love Jane
I also have only three channels, but I'd like some more. I'm a selective viewer though. I think tv has a lot of shit on it indeed, but also some very good things. If you use your mind there's nothing wrong with watching it every now and then.
Yea I used to have a tivo when I had a tv, and it was cool because I could just record something that seemed interesting and watch it whenever and skip commercials. It just got SOOO expensive and I really was not watching it. I'm surprised at how much I really don't miss it, but others are surprised how I could not. It's weird. It's really interesting to see someone's reaction when they come into my house... sometimes they like.. look for the TV, hehehe. It's also kind of interesting now that I never watch it, to hang out with people where the main activity that takes place is TV watching. people watching tv are interesting indeed.
I am not very surprised at all by your decision. My family has always had cable, and there are a few shows I watch, but I watched television a lot more when I was younger (90's cartoons and older, like the Flintstones). Now, I find there is mostly nothing on appealing to me. Reality shows aren't my thing, and the "music channels" aren't based around music at all. I do enjoy watching National Geographic, and I sometimes catch some comedy movies on TV or comedy shows, but other than that, there is nothing on for me. Edit: I forgot to add the Discovery, History, and Travel channels are also fun to watch .
its liberating, isnt it!!! KILL YOUR TV!!! I think that's whats wrong with today.....tv. we are less motivated and more desensitized because of this damned thing.
The weirdest part was the in between stage, before I sold the TV when I had gotten rid of the cable. I have a small house, and tiny living room, but like most boys in their Mid twenties a very large TV. Well that thing was fucking WEIRD! HUGE silver box in the middle of the room, the room was set up so everything was like... FACING it but it was never going on, and never going to go on. It was so weird. My friend I ended up covering it with a tapestry because we found ourselves staring at it, even though there was nothing on it! So yeah, when that got sold it was like the room was all new. Definitely changed the energy in the room. I used to, and still do really like national geographic, history channel, etc. But I realized... just because I liked those channels only meant that if I was watching TV that's what I watched. I was never like... oh I need to see this or that. Eh, I'm much happier without it. I have a lot more time for music. And just more time in general. Even though in the last few months of ownership it was rarely turned on.
Right on man. Ive been wanting to do that and I think I will. It is a complete waste of time and I also wanna get rid of the computer cause i waste so much time on it.
i always debate my computer. At the end of the day, at least for me, I think the computer is fine if kept to a minimal involvement level. Personally I think my computer is a little "too" involved in my life, since I use one for work (I'm a web developer). I think weighing the pros and cons the TV has lots of cons for me. Where as the computers cons are all things I can control to a certain extent.
I still have a T.V. and cable but i can't understand a fuckin' word their sayin' too well.Kung Fu shows are happenin' here, almost every channel, but the news, that's a depressing thing, most of what i hear anyways, and only one station in english. No sex, no nudity, but plenty of ass whoopin'.
Maybe the problem with today is people not taking responsibility for their 'actions' (haha, laying on the couch every evening for example) but just blaming their hip possessions. There's nothing wrong with a product you bought to entertain yourself with, even if you consider more than half of the shows on it wrong. Just don't make that entertainment fill your free time. In the end it's the consumer who's damning himself, not the tv.
i don't have one, and people always go "no tv,what do you do!!" i thinks thats so funny. i tell them well, i hunt, fish, juggle, and play chess. then i ask the do you hunt, fish, juggle, or play chess? and if they say no,i say "well what do you do!"...LOL
I think a few more people will be tuning out pretty soon. As of February 19, 2009, all analog transmission for TV will be cut off by order of the FCC. It means that if you want to continue to watch free TV, you have to buy a Digital Converter ($40-$100), or buy a new TV with a digital converter already installed. This will be the beginning of the end of television. I still watch it at work, because I work alone in a motel lobby, and I occasionally watch the news at home, other than that I don't watch it all that much.
i am gross and perverted, i'm obsessed and deranged, i have existed for years, but very little has changed, i'm the tool of the goverment, and industry too ,for i am destined to rule and regulate you ,i may be vial and pernicious, but you can't look away, i make you think i'm delicious, with the stuff that i say, i'm the best you can get ,have you guessed me yet, i'm the slime ozzing out of your tv set! you will obey me while i lead you, and eat the garbage that i feed you, till the day that we don't need you ,don't go for help no one will heed you! your mind is totally controled, it has been stuffed into my mold, and you will do as you are told, untill the rights to you are sold! Seinfeld, Discovery channel, classic albums (history channel) are great, the rest is shit and im drunk !!!!!!!!
I have a tv, well my roommate has one and its in the living room. I dont really watch it, on all the time I've been living here. I've maybe sat in front of the tv a total of 5 times and didnt spend much time there. I watch cartoons, discovery channel, national geographic, history channel, Seinfeld.. whatever is on that is watchable (which is very little), I used to watch a lot more tv, but lately I just cant stand to be sitting in front of it, I feel like Im wasting my time, there's always something better to do.
