Okay, my weight loss has really stalled out over the last month or two. I stay around 170... sometimes down to 165, sometimes up to 172 or so...

I know I'm eating good and healthy, there isn't any dietary issue here. I know what the problem is - I've slacked bigtime on the exercise thing. Now, it's true that part of what started me slacking was the insane summer heat (which has finally dropped off) but the thing that's bothered me even more is a very bad soreness I've had in my lower region...

I've been trying to figure this out, and from the way it feels and what's gone on with me over the last year I think I have an idea. It's my very lower back/tailbone/butt/hip region that hurts so bad, and it's a sort of pinching sharp pain that's there all the time - but especially bad when I've been sitting or walking/running/exercising at all. It reminds me a little bit (because of the quality of the pain and location) of the ligament stretching I've witnessed in very pregnant friends. Is it possible that my ligaments, muscles, or even bones are going through the opposite of that process, since I've gotten so much smaller? Like my body is re-adjusting to this smaller size?

If that is the issue, is there anything I can do - simple exercises or anything, that will help the process along? I'm forcing myself into more regular physical activity already, anyway... and I hope just getting back into the swing of things will help at least a little... but any help you can add to that would be appreciated! :)

I'm not a doctor obviously, but that sounds to me like it may be sciatica pain. I've had problems with this quite frequently throughout the past 8 years. Thankfully (knock on wood) I haven't been having as much issues with it lately, but I've really, really made an effort to watch my posture as well as how I stand (I have a habit of cocking my left hip out while standing, probably due to natural instinct from having carried all my children on my hips, and I've noticed this can bring on episodes). Funny though, I didn't have as many problems with it when I had my twins, however, I used to carry one on each side, so I couldn't really favor a certain hip when I was carrying them both! ;)

Anyway, watch how you're standing, watch your posture, even how you sit, check to see whether you're shifting your weight more to one side, basically, favoring one side over the other...I had to see a chiropractor when I was pregnant with my eldest due to having sciatica pain so horrible that I couldn't even walk. So I definitely know it would be difficult for you to exercise when you're in so much pain!

Exercises...when I have an episode, I get on all fours and slowly arch my back up like a cat, release back down, and then repeat. I do this at least ten times, which seems to help relieve some of the pain. Also, using a heating pad helps tremendously.

I hope you feel better. It's tough to want to work out when you're in pain like that!

yoga isn't some miracle exercise to be performed at any time. sure, it has some uses, but really, its overblown for the most part.

Be careful with yoga, however, if it's not something you're used to and don't have the flexibility to do the full-on positions, you could injure yourself more. If you try yoga, find a good instructor who will show you modified positions for a beginner who is not as flexible. Yoga books and videos assume that you're in perfect shape and have a lot of flexibility.

I've learned that a lot factors into what causes body pain. For instance, is your body in proper alignment? I invested in some custom-made orthotics to put in my shoes (you can get them through a practitioner of conservative chiropractic care and they're actually molded to your feet) - they were pricey as all hell, but they've done wonders for my back pain and have contributed to me gaining back a lot of mobility, and the ones I got have a 2-year guarantee, so I'll pay $150 a year (the orthotics came out at about $300) for feeling better. Also, what kind of shoes do you wear to exercise, and what sorts of stretches do you do? How is your posture when you stand, walk, or sit? All of these things can be factors in the pain you're experiencing.

I strongly suggest finding someone who practices conservative chiropractic care. They can be harder to find, since a lot of chiropractors are the kooky kind that wanna crack your bones and give you an ear-candling and charge you out the ass. Conservative chiropractic is more focused on physical therapy, massage therapy, teaching good posture, etc. and they can give you a lot of guidance and teach you a lot of preventative things.

Good luck, I hope you feel better soon! :)

Thanks for the advice everyone! I haven't been doing yoga or anything, but I try to spend at least 15-20 minutes stretching every day. The info you provided was infinitely useful fitzy! :) This pain has gotten much better. I think it's also because I've paid more attention to not overworking any particular muscles, and getting more variety in my exercise. I found out a couple months back that I have a hernia, and I haven't gotten it fixed yet, so I haven't been doing sit-ups or running too hard, etc. But I DID just get a bike, finally, so that's definitely helping to tone my thighs and hips up more, along with my lower back, to give me better support all the way around. My weight hasn't budged, but to be fair I haven't been trying so much lately. This spring and summer we'll see how the new round of gardening and shows and hard work does me! :D
