Which part of TX? I've been looking myself - just because I'm still new to texas and don't know the area or people that well. I think there's a website somewhere with drumming circles and potlucks covering Texas, just can't remember which website it was.
When I remember where it is I'll be along at one.

several folks in & around Austin...there's a drum circle under the bridge on the full moon, I think, would have to go into the archives of the Texas Rainbow Chat Group to see for sure...I seem to remember hearing that there are drum circles up in Dallas too

In Kansas, there are some kind folks in Manhattan & in Lawrence, & just a few scattered around Witchita

thanks; me'n'JuJu used to be focalizers for Kansas City...been trying to get TX folks to network more, the folks up in Nacadoses who used to do much of the tx focalizing have gone into retirement or something, haven't had a tx regional in a while.

Maybe the lack of networking in TX is a reason I've had so much trouble finding the damn place. I first heard about the Austin drum circle end of last year, but there seems to be no knowledge of it around town. I had the same problem when I was trying to find Pease Park. Nobody knew of it.

Mind you I asked in about 15 stores and bars downtown where the nearest Walmart was and people there didn't seem to know so it isn't just things like the drumming circle and Eeyores Birthday. It just seems to be the natural Austinite answer to deny all knowledge of anything, even stuff that is in plain view in phonebooks and newspapers.

And yeah i hate shopping in walmart but its cheap and I could buy groceries and stuff at 3am.

I was promoting the little town we live in, I still think it would be a great town to take over. I've heard alot of gripes about the police being "too lax" on drug dealers in town. So if that is true, then I don't think we'll be hassled.

it seems more like keeping austin anti-social and refusing to help others when they are down. thats just my opinion on it - austinites are welcome to keep to their habits, but everywhere else in the world I have been able to know my way around, all the shortcuts and everything within a few hours of arriving.

In austin there seemed to be no willingness to help people or network with people who don't have something good to give in return (money, sex, drugs, whatever), and a lot of the time austinites seem to willingly misdirect travellers - times are that I've asked for directions to a particular place, asked someone who denied ever hearing of the place, only to find that i was next door to the place.

for example everyone, and i mean everyone knows where the nearest walmarts are, and yet everyone who i asked downtown in austin where walmart was said that there was no walmart in austin.

this might have been their political comment, but i happened to know exactly where all walmarts in Austin are and how to get there, and only started asking because of the extreme anti-social nature of Austinites that i'd experienced. I didn't ask anyone if they supported the no-walmart campaign or for their opinions on it, i just asked if they knew where the nearest one was.

the only people who were willing to help weren't native austinites, the people who were more than willing to misdirect me were for the most part native austinites, and native austinites who seemed to like to keep the downtown area free from people who weren't from austin.

(and for the record I kinda hate the walmart corporate policies and the way they treat their staff and put small traders out of business, but hey on a sunday when you are trying to get a tire fixed after it'd been slashed and all the local traders are closed you don't have much option).

The 'Keep Austin Wierd' slogan is not as suitiable for the downtown area as 'Austin for Austinites'... kinda similar to the 'America for Americans' spirit that seems to pervade the area too.

Why would you assume that 'everyone' knows where the local Walmarts are? I wintered in Austin for 13 years and the only Walmart that I ever went to is now closed. I can tell folks how to get to one Target & one K-mart, that is if they haven't closed them (I heard thru the grapevine that the K-mart had closed).

sorry that you seem to have had a hard time in Austin...my experience has been that most folks are helpful, my smiles are usually met with smiles, and plenty have local have struck up conversations with me at bus stops & whatnot. Austin isn't as 'hometownie' as Bastrop County, where we now live, but it's okay IMO.

i guess that was a general assumption, but the sentiment kinda carries with any example. the people i asked had been in the city most of their lives and they knew tho. trust me i have a natural ability for reading what people leave out when they talk to me.

maybe its just a talent of mine to know how to get to places, and maybe that talent just got lost on arrival in austin for a few. maybe the fact that the same people move in the same social circles as the people who slashed my tires had more of a reason behind it.

BTW Bastrop sounds a real nice place to live, I met a chick from there a few months ago who loved the place but found it too quiet and hard to get around. She moved to Austin recently. I keep meaning to visit the city, but am still stuck in the A-Town for a few more months at least.

Bastrop is quiet but it's much more hippie friendly than some of the other counties in Tx.

Out of curiousity...Have you ridden the busses much & if so, did you have the same type of anti-social experiences?

ah with the anti-socialness i think it was just the faces who seemed to be in my life a lot at the time, my experience in the city is picking up for me now - just gotta stay clear of most of the cliquey atmosphere downtown.

As for riding the buses... travelling? not so much here - but in England I used to, and I only had a few anti-social experiences there when in Hampshire.

Why do the hip folks of Texas think that Austin is the only place to live the way we live? It's like saying if you want to live this way move to Colorado, Oregon, or Arizona. If everyone did, then the place would be over run with us. Home is where you make it and where the heart is. Out here people are friendly and will give a helping hand if you are broken down on the side of the road, mind if you don't bring up politics or religion (or fake it like me). But I feel with enough of us out here, we can educate them more to many resources like solar and wind, not to mention how are lifestyle is unique and poses no threat to them.

Besides if we all lived in those places, we would rarely get out to see such a beautiful and colorful country we live in. Oh an I didn't mean to sound like I was bashing those places. they are great places and many I would still love to visit.
