Who here's from Kiev in the Ukraine or Russia? I had grandparents from Kiev when it was in Imperial Russia/USSR , now the Ukraine and I'm looking to do all that ancestor tracing stuff. They left in about the 1920s when the Civil War was on. How easy/ hard is it to trace relatives from Kiev and similar places if youre in England and your Russian doesnt amount to much more than da , and niet? Are there any good websites etc or does it really mean a visit to Kiev? Would be very grateful for any advice Thanks and Best wishes
i' from russia... well...it's very hard to trace relatives if you know russian badly... coz ya need to apply to special services...
i'm in Canada but my family on my mothers side is from the Ukraine, Russia and Germany i really want to try and find my relatives
Neponiatka , Special services? Is that like the Speznaz - sort of all camouflage gear , red berets and machine guns?I thought Russia had "calmed down" a bit in recent years ...! Any other suggestions ?LOL Indian Summer ,u look quite Russian in the eyes BTW Anyway , I found this website for the Ukraine. www.genealogicaltree.org.ua email genealogicaltree@ukrpost.net as well. Theres like an application form there which I sent , not sure if its free or if theylll say I got to pay something- afterwards !?( it was confusing...) Hopefully I wont find out Im the sole surviving descendant of Nicholas 2nd - and find out someones been sent over to put Polonium in my dinner Good luck if u start researching! regards all
LOL Abseiling thro windows to find a family tree seemed a but strange! I wonder , anyone know is there some sort professional licensing/accreditation for family tree tracing in Rus /Ukr? PS Neponiatka, u look a bit tentative looking at the water -had a crab just bitten your toe?
I think its because in many/some opinions the Ukraine is a region and not a country. The Ukraine had the original capital ( Kiev) of the territories "regions" of "the Rus" ( which became Russian Empire / Soviet Union). The Ukraine I understand meant "the borderland" - between the Russian/ Slavic tribes or states and places like Poland / Germanic states etc. Its like "the Argentine" was the "the territory/lands of silver". Someone once said that the Ukraine is "the only country that has stonewashed denim as its national costume" ( he was later found in a riverbed with concrete shoes on... Maybe putting "the " infront makes it sound more cool? Certainly more exotic
Thanks. That's very interesting information. I love finding the orgins to simple everyday things that we tend to overlook and not question. Thanks.
