I don't understand, in a long car ride I will gladly try and take a nap, in the afternoon if I'm exhausted I'll gladly sleep, but I'm extremely afraid of going to sleep at night. I've thought it could be the the dreams, as I'm afraid of nightmares, or the feeling of not being there, as I hate that, but both of these would occur during a normal nap in the afternoon. Does anyone know why I just don't want to sleep at night?

Are you afraid that you will never wake up?

Deep sleep is like being in the womb. Ask your mother if she had any traumatic moments while she was pregnant with you, like a car accident, almost drowning, being caught in a fire, falling down a staircase, etc. While you're at it, ask her what she craved while you were in the womb.

That is part of it, being scared I'll never wake up. But that ONLY happens at night. I don't have that feeling in the day if I take a nap or anything, it's always at night.

The difference between day and night is the silence. During the day we may be aware of noises around us, of other people, of car traffic, of church bells, of radios playing in the next cubicle, etc. During the night it becomes very quiet. Until the birds wake us up.

Personally, I love sleep. The one problem I had were with birds which nested right outside my bedroom window. When they started to sing I would hear it as music, their cadence caused my mind to associate it with songs. The weirdest were when I heard the most beautiful rap song in the word - only to find out that it was because of two crickets chirping and a UFO nightmare caused by the exhaust flapper of a parked tractor trailer.

I suggest you try to meditate on hearing while asleep. Many times we can't sleep because of a water drip. Try leaving your window opened 2 inches to allow sound to come into your bedroom. It may help your sleep problem. (Definitely secure your window such that it cannot be opened from outside if you live on the first floor.) Baring that you may want to put a bird feeder outside your bedroom. That should definitely have some affect on your sleep.
