Any comments on free reg cleaners?
I just downloaded Eusing and Regpair for XP to try and clean mine up. I think I have something wrong in there as I'm still getting the old "Error 732 remote computer doesn't agree with the PPP settings" on dial-up to the net. [IMG]

Haven't tryed them out yet thou.

the fdisk utility works well but you still need to repart before you install a new OS.

the free reg fix will only fix some errors, you normally have to buy the full version in order to fix all errors

A registry cleaner won't solve any problem, especially not an internet problem. Basically, all registry cleaners do is get rid of registry entries that are no longer used. It will not fix an internet setting as the registry cleaner could care less. It will appear like a valid entry even if it dosen't work.

True 'nuff Dodger. Plus they may get rid of an entry you NEED for programs YOU installed. Some shareware WILL be found to be spyware by the cleaner.

Meagain it would be good if you could gather more info on this problem by doing these two things
enable the computer logs to save various data and then post the relevent error logs and
then also get the exact error message.
also you dont say what OS you are using or anything
    so -
    clear rhe error logs
    reboot computer
do what you have to to cause the error
    show us the error logs
    tell us the operating system
let us know the exact error msg

    Thanks guys.....

I ran the reg. cleaners and found whole bunches of sh-t. I tried the cleaner cuz I saw something on the net somewhere that said the registry might cause the error. I wiped it all out and haven't checked to see if anything quit. I'll find out when I try to run something and it dies!

Foxfire and Mozilla work, so what the heck.

Sentient, I'm running XP Pro 2002 Service Pack 2 on an Athlon XP 2400+ 2G with 1 G RAM....NorthGate....I think they went belly up!
Using AVG's virus program, haven't thought about turning that off to see what happens.

Now as far as error logs......how would I be doing that one? I have no idea!!

    The message is:
"Error 732: Your computer and the remote computer could not agree on PPP control protocols"
    Then I redial.

    Thanks again.

BTW, hi Matt long time no see.

It seems like somethings messed up with the dial up configuration. Have you tried deleting and then remaking the connection in network settings? Also, try reinstalling the drivers for your modem. If all else fails, call your ISP. It may very well be a problem on their end.

Try running PC PITSTOP-It's free and does a whole battery of diagnostic tests on your system and explains in simple terms what problems you have. It tells you what to do to fix the problem and even has free tech support people to help you if you want. It's a great program and simple to use and completely free!-They are not pushing their products on you either.
You may have alot of spyware in there. Try running SPYBOT Search and Destroy to weed out the garbage.-Then defrag using Perect Disk-use the 30 day free trial version-it does a super good job of lining up your most used programs first and putting everything in order of most used first. Spybot is also free.

    Thanks,

It was the modem. I popped in a "new" used one and it works great.

This would be my plan of action to diagnose then fix the problem-I would first off-run the totally free diagnostic program PC PITSTOP--It takes 10 minutes to do a whole bunch of tests on your system-it will scan from top to bottom-the drives-then the board-the video and basically everything in there that could be wrong or slowing things down-it will tell you exactly what needs to be done-then I would download and run two free for 30 day programs to scan and repair the system files -Reg Vac for the registry and their other program for all other files called A-1 Cleaner-then after all junk files are removed (and both programs create a backup for you by default' you'll lose nothing until your ready to)-then' I would go to MY Computer-right click on whatever drive your system files are on and click on doing a scan and repair for all the system files-check the boxes to allow Windows to replace any corrupt files-if you do all that and still it has a problem-get out the XP disk and do a repair install- you lose nothing-or try doing a system restore if you have any restore points set up-you should-and while your in there' change the setting so you are only storing one days worth of files instead of 2 weeks worth that Windows has set by default-I think 1 gig is all you need for backup-PC Pitstop will explain that to ya if you run it-
