Draw each strand individually and use thin lines....keep sharpening your pencil when your lines start getting kinda thick. Then, when you have them all drawn in, go back and shade over....
That's how I do it. It's time consuming, but I think it looks most realistic that way.

Or if you don't want to draw each hair, you can just draw the shapes that are made by the shadows and highlights.

It depends whose hair I'm drawing and how realistic or what style i'm doing. I usually don't draw each individual strand/lock. I just try to capture the basic essence of their hair, the viewer's mind will fill in the rest.

You draw big locks, you have to remember that they go one over the other… Then you divide them to smaller ones… You make stronger shades between locks, stronger/darker shades where those locks are bigger…

I try a new technique everytime, but I have to say a sharpened eraser's quite essential whilst drawing hair.. I use it to add highlights and make some strands stand out.
You definitely don't have to draw every single strand methinks.. Try and give it depth by using both darks and highlights! Near the roots, hair is usually darker because it doesn't catch as much light there...

Besides that, it's just experimenting I suppose! Good luck :)

Look at tutorials on the net like this one: http://www.rebekahlynn.com/free/tutorial/hair_tutorial.html

they might help you. Practice to develope the skill and experiment with different techniques until you find one that works for you. and remember to be patient [IMG]

focus on the shadow shapes and put only a few thin lines in the lighter areas. to avoid bathing cap of hair head don't be afraid to have a few flying wispies and remember that hair grows out of your head not on it.

I agree. Focus on the shapes with a few touches of texture. Also remember to contast slightly thicker shape lines with the slightly thinner texture lines.
