What are, or were, the best power trios IYO? are they an effective style of Rock or are they limited? I can think of Jade Warrior Budgie Three man Army Quatermass May Blitz They were like a wall of sound to me, and their music would put me in another time and place. But what are the new bands like, that are into the power trio format? How do they affect you?
Most of the new power trio's are heavier, but still very obviously influenced by the older ones. Sleep and Earthless are really heavy and also pretty groovy, Sleep is leaning more towards the doom/stoner genre that came up in the nineties though. Also in the stoner genre (which generally means louder bass, fuzzy guitarsound and slower compositions) check out the first album of Sgt. Sunshine. Some of the more traditional power trio's today: - Orange Sunshine - Dzjenghis Kahn - there are more, but I can't think of real power trio's at the moment You can hear Black sabbath (technically a power trio with vocalist), Jimi Hendrix Experience and mainly Blue Cheer influences in these bands very well. They lean equally to the pyschedelic rock power trio's as to the early heavy metal power trio's like Budgie and Sabbath, they all intend to have distortion in their guitar sound and heavy bass though, which makes you think it's metal at first instance. To me it's pure fucking rock though. What it does to me? See them live, and you experience it yourself! Oh yeah, also check out Nebula and Atomic Bitchwax. Not really tradional, but both trio's who make (heavy) psychedelic rock with groovy guitar solo's.
I am glad you mentioned these bands, because, you can only listen to older bands so much, then you feel a need for something new. I was wondering if it is a lost and forgotten style or what? But i definately will check out the ones you schooled me for. Thanks
They all have myspacepages where you can check a few songs of them out rightaway. Hope you dig them, let me know! The one of Dzjenhis Kahn isn't really easy to be found: http://www.myspace.com/genghiskhan3 I enjoyed them better live (last weekend ) but the sound of the Widow is pretty good here.
What's a power trio? Does it warrant a certain sound or is any band with 3 people in it a power trio?
I see a power trio as a rock trio with one person on drums, one on guitar and one on bass. So if it's for example a trio violin players or a thrash metal trio I don't call it a power trio.
Okay, makes sense. Hm... can't really say I know a lot of bands like that from the top of my head. I'll let you guys know when I come up with any bands.
\ A power trio is 3 musicians that are, a main solo instrument, such as a guitarist or an organist /keyboards, and a bass, the blending between drums and the main solo is essential, and a drummer. They usually depend on volume and rhythm integrated with effects and distortion which can if used correctly and tasefully can make 3 sound like much more.Atomic Rooster for instance, employed a guitarist, an organist, using the bass pedals, and drummer.
Ah right, that's an even better description . Not all power trio's have to lean heavy on distortion I think. Look at some Cream songs for example.
Yeah, I ment that it isn't always used to make it sound like there's much more then 3 people playing. However I really dig how bands like Orange Sunshine can produce a wall of sound with that.
Are you a musician by the way?I used to be one once, and distortion can really help.Effects are an extention of that factor like echo delay, and the old fuzz sound, wha-wha pedals, i know those are dated things but in the beginning all the weird shit you could muster was great. The original idea of fuzz was to mimic the sax.
They're not dated in my opinion, these things are still used in the space rock genre and even more among bands that are often called stoner or fuzz rock. Unfortunately I still can't call myself a musician, but I'm planning on practising more in the near future
Rock and roll is my religion and my law......I always played in a power trio format and the bass player usually had a few tricks up his sleeve and so did most of the drummers when it came to percussion instuments.I tried to play bass as the others did their stuff on stage. I played flute i love Roland Kirk and organ/keyboards but I'm no Vincent Crane just basic chords, I'm not even good at drums. But the more you can do the better. Jack Bruce played some mean blues harp. But Clapton is a one trick pony very good at what he does, but once in awhile it would be interesting to hear Eric play the trombone.
