its india pale ale, not indian pale ale. like canada geese rather than canadian geese.

the ales of old weren't indian. they were british, but they were going to india. they are india pale ales, not indian pale ales....

but they're pretty good, but most are very hoppy. it took me a long time to learn to really like very hoppy beers. i love them now, but there are a lot of other types of beers i like a lot, too. pretty much every style is great in its own way :)

and while many india pale ales are stronger than english or american pale ales, pils, many other lagers and ales, they are rarely double the strength. most beers people consume are between 4-6%alcohol by volume, with the vast majority above 4.5% but below 5.5%..ipas are usually 5%-7% by volume, usually at around 6%. "imperial" or "double" ipas can range from 6%-10+% depending on how they're brewed. the stronger they are, the more malt they have to use. the more malt they use, the sweeter it is, and since IPAs are supposed to be somewhat bitter from a lot of english style hops, the more malt they use to boost alcohol levels, the more hops they have to use to combat the sweetness and dominate with a hops flavor and aroma. depending on what kind of hops are used it can be strongly bitter, earthy and spicy, or bright and citrussy or even floral.

IPAs are a very good style if its a well made beer, but as a style they have a tendency to be very intensely flavored beers, and sometimes very bitter....if you tend to gravitate to the milder golden lagers and such, an IPA may be a bit much. but then again, just because i didnt like really hoppy beers right off the bad doesnt mean nobody does, i know a lot of people that do.

good things to look out for are maharaja imperial IPA, stone IPA, stone ruination IPA, and samuel smith india ale...all excellent.

i've not had mendocino's white hawk ipa....but it has pretty positive reviews at beeradvocate....

and it says its 7%ABV, so yeah it is pretty strong compared to your average golden lager or session ale...i bet its pretty good. i'd like to try it for sure.

goose island is pretty decent, too, and its pretty common in grocery stores at least in my area. but its more on the earthy/spicy/herbal side of the equation, and less on the citrus/floral side of things....i like it, but its not as much to my liking as maharaja which is very heavy in the citrus notes, very malty, not overpoweringly bitter (though still fairly bitter, of course), and at over 9% alcohol it really does qualify as roughly double the strength of most beer.
