Hello Everyone! Okay, so since I'm taking philosophy classes, I'm doing a project on the 10 commandments being: You shall have no other Gods but me. You shall not make for yourself any idol, nor bow down to it or worship it. You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God. You shall remember and keep the Sabbath day holy. Respect your father and mother. You must not kill. You must not commit adultery. You must not steal. You must not give false evidence against your neighbour. You must not be envious of your neighbour's goods. You shall not be envious of his house nor his wife, nor anything that belongs to your neighbour. I actually need to interview people on their views of these 10 commandments, and I thought that it would make this project a lot more interesting, if I could put in some hippie views. So I was hoping if someone, could actually give their 'hippie' opinion on these commandments. I know it's a lot to ask for, but i'm really hoping someone could give his/her hippie perspective on them. Thank you so much in advance, I'd really appreciate it if someone would help me! Love&Peace, Julia
Sorry i don't have my official hippie degree but if you asked me what my opinion is i'll certainly give it to you.
i don't call myself a hippy (everyone else does though...) but here's my views. You shall have no other Gods but me. i disagree with this - i do not believe in the idea of a jealous God. also i believe in a Goddess too. You shall not make for yourself any idol, nor bow down to it or worship it. also, i disagree. i don't personally bow down before any idols but i think "each to their own" - the one thing i agree with christianity about though, is holding Money up as a God. "the love of money is the root of all evil" - i agree with that. You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God. i understand this "rule" and how it may be offensive to use the Lord's name in vain, but i'm not completely in agreeance. i do say "Oh My God" sometimes myslef... You shall remember and keep the Sabbath day holy. i don't believe in a Sabbath day - all days should be filled with sprituality, not just Sunday. Respect your father and mother. yes, i agree. You must not kill. i completely agree. You must not commit adultery. i tend to agree with this - but i am open about this one. go with what your heart says. You must not steal. also, i'm undecided. if you are poor and starving - is it not better to steal bread to eat? i think it depends on circumstances. You must not give false evidence against your neighbour. i like the idea of this commandment - it shows you should look out for your fellow man. You must not be envious of your neighbour's goods. You shall not be envious of his house nor his wife, nor anything that belongs to your neighbour. definately agree - jealousy is the worst emotion in my opinion.
1. against, but i think of gods in more or less the greek sense rather than the christian sense. 2. against, but i used this to get out of saying the pledge of allegience. 3. mistranslation, it refers to taking god's name as an oath (i swear to god), rather than saying 'god damnit' (which is really a short prayer). 4. against, because of the fucked up shit you have to do with the sabbath, and the fact that they'd kill you if you didn't, not to mention that i can't buy alcohol because of this. 5. for, but it all depends on the cirumstance (generally it's a good idea for children to obey their parents, but just because you squirted out a litter doesn't mean you are correct). 6. mistranslation, it realy means "thou shall not murder", and i don't agree with killing under all but the strictest circumstances (i'll die of starvation if i don't go fishing) 7. against, the idea of marrage (and the bible's idea of marriage ((one man and several women))) is unatural and unhealthy. 8. for, but it depends on the circumstances. 9. for, but it depends on the circumstances. 10. against, envy is what drives the free market.
1. You shall have no god, unless it is real, as based in experience. 2. You shall not judge other persons deities, but also don't bow down just because they say so. 3. Don't curse the deity of your worship or you'll be cursed back when you again seek their blessings. 4. Take a day off a week and don't waste it on anything but recreation. 5. Respect father and mother, if possible, if not, try to be better than they were. 6. Don't kill others, don't kill yourself. Life is a gift, don't take it away. 7. Be content with your own spouse. Don't steal another's. 8. Give until it hurts. That's good karma. Not giving is stealing, which creates illness. 9. Don't lie about other's deeds and gossip, as it will come back to haunt you. 10. Be content with your lot, as if you are not then you will never be content seeing as there are always people better off than you.
1. I am God 2. Burn your draft card, flag, and kill your television. 3. call a spade a spade 4. don't poop parties 5. tune in and drop out 6. make love not war 7. unethical dealers who misrepresent or cut their products are not welcome 8. don't Bogart that joint 9. don't narc or rollover 10. nothing exists, whether it is of yourself, others, or nothing whatsoever
Actually saying "Oh My God" isn't using the lords name in vain saying "Oh My Jesus" or "Oh My Yahweh" is using the lords name in vain. That is specifically why the 'profane' aren't taught to use 'Gods' real name, just like the egyptians masses use to use "Ba'al" which means lord.
Well if you want my opinion there is some good things in there but my "rule book" is based on what is healthiest for myself. 10.You must not be envious of your neighbour's goods. You shall not be envious of his house nor his wife, nor anything that belongs to your neighbour. as noted by a previous poster this is a good rule, i like it personaly because it is not healthy to hold on to negative emotions. The rest are relative to the situation i am in, and some not at all, like keep the sabbath holy, that has no relevence to me. It is important to understand the commandments in context, these were laws to maintain order amongst the hebrews after they had left Egypt, they were still in exile and these laws were made to maintain a strong community, as well as maintain faith in their Jealous 'God'. Shortly after these commandments were given the Hebrews were commanded by Yahweh to kill many people (while returning to Canaan i believe) which seems to contradict rule 6. However these rules as i said weren't meant to be universal but merely apply to them as laws for their community.
