Aloha All I'm thinking of growing dreads cause i have really annoying thick hair, it's currently short but only takes about three months to grow long again here is a picture of my hair long and straight the problem is that my hair grows poker straight and really thick would i be able to get dreads to lock easily or would i need a lot of wax in it etc.... any advice would be great
wax will destroy your hair. most people here would highly advise you against using it. your hair looks a little short for backcombing so your best bet is probably to just stop brushing and conditioning it and let the knots form up on their own. if they weren't knotty by the time they've grown out a little, you can always backcomb.
definately hold off on the wax...it will just make your hair really sticky and every little bit o dust and whatever will join in. your hair is pretty short so just stop brushing your hair and using conditioner when you wash. i would also recommend using a soap that doesn't leave behind residue. i've had locks for a little over eight years now and i like using any flavor of dr. bronner's castile soap...recently i tried out burt's bees rosemary shampoo bar and it works really well also. get yourself a nice natural fiber hat or tam...shove yer hair up in der and be patient....as your hair rats up...separate (or should i say rip?) them into locks. be PATIENT! don't roll em like crazy with wax cuz they'll break off at ze top. love you!
well i do have to grow it out again so it will be after christmas before i can actually get dreads because my hair is short however it grows rediculously fast, thats one of the reasons i want dreads cause i dont have to get it cut every 3 - 4 weeks then. it will take me about 3 months-ish to get it back to that lenght i can grow it longer but the main problem is my hair does not frizz and is in no way curly is there any way to encourage my hair to dread naturally, i dont really condition my hair or comb it i just wash it with head and shoulders, im in ireland by the way so i have no idea if i can get those shampoo's or soaps so any suggestions would be great
ummmmm...i just said find yourself a nice natural fiber hat or tam...put yer hair up in it and wait or you could use yer hands to make scrubbing motions on your hair and scalp while they are dry but with the flat of your palm...this should help your hair to get ratty...you can also do this with a tam on your head cuz your hair is short. the best way to "get" dreads i think is to do nothing really. good luck
my hair looked alot like yours does before i got my dreads. i'm six months in, and their doing great. definitly no wax. i know from experience. what's grosser still, is there's still some in there. and those are the places less knotted from the rest. and at the end of the day, your dreads are all sticky and you literally have to pick out all the little peices of lint and stuff they pick up, cause there's so much of it. i would say go natural or just backcomb and then go natural
salt water will help your hair tangle. Not using head and shoulers will help also, that has lots of conditioners in it.
cool thanks for all the help, im just worried that if i went through the 8 hours of putting the dreads in and then they dont lock. this is the look i wanna go for hopefully i can pull it off
yeah stargate! love that show! if you can pull off dat look give me a call heh heh heh! check out iherb.com or drbronners.com for some good residue free soap. i noticed that one of the sisters posted a homemade dread soap wash some where in these posts about locks. you can pull it off....just GIVE IT TIME AND BE PATIENT! love yew!
hey! my hair is like yours- really fine and really thick and it doesn't tangle for anything. what i did was just start using dr bronners soap every time my hair got greasy (like every 3-4 days) for a couple of weeks and then yesterday when i put my dreads in the hair backcombed nicely. i will also say don't use wax but i don't have much else to offer since i just got mine done!!
thanks i was hoping someone with a similar situation went through it does anyone know if they sell the dr brommers stuff in the shops cause i dont have a credit card plus P&P to ireland is quite a bit
sweet i did the flat palm thing on my hair and it helped it get really ratty and knotty thanks lol oh by the way does anyone know any good sites for wool beanies i got 20 bucks yeah and that stargate guy is how i want my dreads too lol gl on your dreads
my hair was very very thick too short, & only lil bit curly, barely..& just goin natural worked fine for me..that was 17 yearsago, didnt know bout bronners then, just used regular bar soap..luckily i accidently picked a no residue 1..lol im sure u can find something in ireland that works..homemade herbal soaps..i bet u vcan make your own if u find some info online google something like homemade non residue natural shampoo or something
there was one other thing that i wanted to ask about them, im a swimmer and lifesaving instructer and i was wondering would i be able to swim with dreads or would the chlorine in the water mess them up???
